New User presentation
Hello everyone, my name is Carlo Casoli, I am a retiree of Italian origins with a passion for astronomy since childhood. I am interested in solar and lunar observation and photography.
I have been resuming observations for about 6 months. I am still in the process of learning to optimize the use of my configuration for the sun. I am attaching one of the latest footage on NOAA 12882 with the follow configuration:
Tecnosky Apo 80/480
Daystar Quark Cromosphere H alfa filter
Televue Barlow 2x
Ioptron CEM70G + Tripier
ZWO ASI 174 MM (Bin 2x , 16 bit)
Shooting and processing software : SkyCapture (500 Frames, Flat Frame), Autostakkert 3.1.4, Adobe Premiere Pro 2021
Comments and criticisms are welcome to optimize the use of this configuration.
In the future I would like to improve the detail, resolution and contrast of images; suggestions for a new configuration are welcome.
Greetings and clear skies

Re: New User presentation
Very interesting about Arrakis, I had to look that up. I never saw the first film (too young) and I haven't read the book. Everyone used to say the film was terrible. However there is a new film coming out in 2021 and I would be interested to see it. Coincidentally the lead character in Dune 2021 is Timothée Chalamet and he happens to be here on holiday with me at the moment. It is very annoying because he has taken over our favourite place and we have not been able to access it since last Thursday I hope after today we might get it back for 2 days before they all leave. I hope they take their snow with them too https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6166392/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Re: New User presentation
Goodmorning everyone.
Below are the links to my albums on Flickr.
I also add links to a video of a flare (class C?) And a photo of my equipment. As you can see, I don't have a fixed position and at my age of 65 with overweight problems and numerous muscle injuries to the legs it is quite tiring to assemble and disassemble every time. It also prevents me from using heavier tools that might allow me to improve observations.

My first equipment : https://www.flickr.com/photos/carlocaso ... 8695329432
The telescope was a Newton 150 mm F 1000 mm with Pecchioli Optic - Florence; hand-built telescope during the last year of classical high school in Pesaro. I was 18 and it was a beautiful time. I was taking hand-guided photos with exposure times of 15 'at the Newton's main focus. For the shooting I used a Tamron 135 mm telephoto on a broken Zenith body, with only the B pose working.
Then with the degree and the job I have not practiced anymore. Now as a retiree I attend the astrophysics course at the University of Bologna and I have resumed observations. The beauty of the pension is that I can make solar observations even for several hours since I have a lot of free time!
Greetings

Re: New User presentation
WoW, Carlos, You are an accomplished solar imager. That's a really nice board of images on all accounts! I too have an old 150mm reflector. A Criterion Dynascope F8 focal length. It's probably made sometime in the 1970s. It could even be 1960's era. I bought it second hand in the mid 80's and have no idea actually how old it is. Criterion was bought out by Bausch and Lomb ( Bushnell division ) back in 1982 and the scope didn't look new. They prodused scopes under the Bushnell name through 83 then were gone. I have always liked the 6"F8 focal length. I want a good 6" refractor for white light solar.
Alexandra,
I did go see the Dune movie in 1985. I was 21 years old that year. I await the new one whose release has been held up by COVID-19. I am curious how it will hold up against the old one which was very good in my opinion. The books are even better.
Isn't it funny how the Rich and Famous bump us commoners out!? I have seen it happen here in public places which are supposed to be " equal opportunity " for everyone. :-(

Thx Eric. A life of continuous study and improvement is what makes us feel good and keeps the brain young. At 65 I am studying Astrophysics, although it is difficult and you need a lot of memory to take the exams.
I really think that from this point of view SolarChat can help me a lot to improve and pursue new goals.

Welcome Carlo! I looked at your album on flickr, your photos are great. I was amazed by an old photo of the m42, captured on film and manually guided.

Re: New User presentation
Thanks Ivan
adolescence is a beautiful and dreamy time. My dream was to become an astronomer; coming from classical high school, I did not have confidence in my abilities and in the actual possibility of finding a job once I graduated; for which I chose the Faculty of Engineering.
Now as a retiree I went back to my dreams by returning to observe the sky and attending the degree course in Astrophysics. The passion is still despite all that of 18 years

Re: New User presentation
You are very correct Carlo, in that keeping the brain ticking-over from and during your retirement years is definitely the way forward. With little time to get bored, then astronomy in all its' forms is a very useful (and youthful) way ahead for yourself and myself too.
In two-days time at the then age of 75, I also am just going back to my earliest days of looking at anything in the skies above (in the very busy air-space for aircraft above my location) and ultimately also in the space beyond our atmosphere.
So I've since those very early-days been involved in all aspects of military and civil aviation, including flying all over the place in light aircraft too.
Retiring from flying, has allowed me to enhance the astronomical interests with imaging as just part of that.
Possibly one of my last larger projects currently under construction is a second observatory known as the "Mini-Obsy" which is nearing completion before the cold and no doubt wetter-weather intervenes and before the Winter sets-in, here in S.E.England.
Primarily for imaging the Sun and Moon during their low altitudes in the Winter-months, the Mini-Obsy is a short-distance from the Main-Observatory where a better line-of-sight at times is available...
I can't honestly see myself ever just sitting-around watching that oblong-screen with either interesting or rubbish programs, rather than doing the number of things (plus astronomy of one sort or another)...
Best Wishes and Clear Skies
Terry

Re: New User presentation
I agree with your words Terry: at our age it is important to stay active and not stop dreaming of new goals to reach.
Congratulations on the new observatory.
Clear skies.

Welcome to Solarchat!
I have just been admiring your H-alpha album.
Some really beautiful images!
The Dune film showed remarkable and unique story invention.
Well beyond the usual standard of SF films. IMHO.

Re: New User presentation
Thanks Carlo and dreaming is my way of designing (or correcting) my designs, just before actually falling asleep - even.
Usually, I come-up with a better design for the next days work, which has certainly happened last-night for today's work - completed.
So tonight, I will no-doubt do the same for the next/final part of the construction tomorrow, where I have already sourced parts from my store of bits...
Cheers
Terry
