October 12 2021 Observations. B5.93 Flare at 16:02 UTC
Session time is from 15:30 to 16:38 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy with seeing a bit below average. The temperature is 66F ( 18.8C )
Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see four plages in the solar chromosphere today. AR12882 in the NW quadrant is by far the most spectacular. I can see three filaments radiating outwards from the central spot. GONG CT shows 4 there. The plage resembles a broken M centered on the spot. At 16:00 UT I noticed a brightened area within AR12882 and over the next couple of minutes brightened more. I thought, that's gotta be a small flare and checked the GOES satellite data on SpaceWeatherLive. Sure enough it was. It didn't last long and within a mere few minutes was completely gone. It was a minor flare at B5.93 intensity.
I can also see a small plage marking the location of AR12884 in the SW. I see tow more plages in the SE quad. The brighter one is approaching the Central Longitudinal Meridian. GONG Cerro Tololo shows two more disturbed areas, AR12883 in the NW and another in the NE. I could not pick them out of the chromosphere today.
I see a nice string of filaments in the far SW. I can see another well NE of AR12882.
The SW shows some nice bright easy prominences on the limb. They are feathered out with some fainter plasma connecting them. I can also see some nice ones on the NW limb. GONG gives an accurate appearance of what they look like visually, except of course the color. The NE limb shows some fainter scattered ones.
The mottles are easily seen today across the solar disc.
Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 62.5x ( WL )
I can see 4 spots/pores with certainty in AR12882. The major spot is oval in shape N-S with a prominent penumbra. The umbra is dark with a bulbous " top ". I can see no fine detail in the umbra or penumbra today. Three small spots lie curved around the big one to the NNW-NW. I think I may be glimpsing a small pore to the NE of the main spot but I am unsure of it. SDO does show something there but I was able to maybe glimpse it once but never could see it a second time. I see no other spots or pores on the disc outside of those in AR12882.
I can see a patches of faculae in the NW ( AR12883 ) SW and NE. All of course near the limb.
That makes 4 areas seen in WL.
The fine granulation is visible but is a bit soft.
Carpe Lumen!

Thanks for the great detailed observation James, how great to see a flare even if it is a B class

Thanks for that report James and the pics of the new flare. Not entirely surprised.
Your question about the possible aurorae on your previous post, is now confirmed that according to spaceweather.com of today/12th, that many parts of the U.S. were able to see that event and whilst not actually looking at the geography of the U.S., I'm not sure how far south would have been able to see it - around 02:30UTC..
"Last night, auroras were sighted in more than a dozen US states after a CME struck Earth's magnetic field."
Pics etc., can be seen there...

Re: October 12 2021 Observations. B5.93 Flare at 16:02 UTC
I'll look that up on SpaceWeather.com Terry. Thanks.
The flare was a small one but was still not difficult to see in the low power full disc image given by the SolarMax II 60. I had intended to use the SolarMax II 90 but when I first went out to set up the skies were almost overcast so I set up the 60 instead. Surprisingly the skies cleared quickly. Oh, well. I still got the flare anyway but the 90 would have given a better view in higher magnification and resolution.

The scopes look wobbly as hell in the image. It's funny how a camera's perspective somehow distorts things. They are actually quite steady.
So far I have completely overcast skies today. No sun visible as of yet.
