Saying Goodbye to AR2882 | Oct 15th 2021

Post by MalVeauX »

Heya,

I got a break this evening in late afternoon daylight time, 4pm Eastern approximately, to watch the parting activity of AR2882 as it goes around the limb. There's an interesting prominence region and some little disturbances here and there, but otherwise the disc is very empty again. Though it looks like something powerful may be coming our way soon. I finally got around finishing a project involving being able to use my 214mm multi-band DERF (Aries) on other scopes beyond my 200mm options, so had an excellent ERF holding cell 3D printed to fit smaller 150mm and 120mm options with a mask system to control the options and I got it done today so was able to get a first light with it and make sure everything functions correctly as I move towards my next mod step (involving a Lunt etalon).

Nice work Marty. The disc is starting to calm down now a bit with AR12882 leaving the scene. Today had some decent prominences which are well sgown in your images.

Thanks for posting.

Very good images Marty. Well done. These are the best I’ve seen coming out of Florida in quite some time.

Mighty Marty! Great imaging job! I like the cell!

Thanks for sharing.

Still no seeing for your C8 ?

Valery.

Congratulations on the SPOD, Marty. Very nice images: great texture in the chromosphere.

Thanks all, :bow
Valery wrote: Sun Oct 17, 2021 3:03 am Still no seeing for your C8 ?
I had some good summer seeing that was 0.8 arc-seconds or so, and could benefit the 200mm of the C8, but I actually dislike the FOV of the C8 for HA purposes, HA structures are so large it requires mosaics often to see their entire structure and so I actually prefer the FOV of a 120mm~150mm for HA purposes, still with some resolution for interest but simplicity of not needing to do a several panel mosaic to show an entire active region, or large swath of prominence at the limb, etc.

So to make it more useful day to day, I had this filter holding cell printed to hold the 214mm D-ERF in a cell that will mount on smaller aperture scopes so that I can use it with smaller refractors or my C8 alike, and modular. Love it. Works really well. No heat coming out the back of the refractor with the primary D-ERF up front and a selective secondary D-ERF to finish the blocking.

I will see about being able to use this big D-ERF in front of my Calcium scope too (a re-spaced 120mm objective) with a down step coupling that inserts into the back of the ERF cell seen above.

Really fantastic to be able to 3D print these things, inexpensively, and let me use the 214mm D-ERF on any of my instruments. Just great flexibility!

TL;DR: I just like the wider FOV of the 150mm F8 refractor and the seeing limits are easier on the image scales with it in HA and Continuum :)

Very best,
