October 15 2021 Observations
Session time is 15:35 until 16:35 UTC. The skies are clear. The seeing is well below average to poor. The temperature is 79F ( 26.1C )
Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 50x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see only three active regions in the chromosphere today. AR12882 is very close to the NW limb and will be on the limb in 24 hours. I can see a filament NW of it very near the limb. I can see it's large spot too. I can see a lesser scattered plage in the SW quadrant. SE of it I can see a single filament. I can also see a bit of plage in the far NE near the limb. The GONG Big Bear Ha image shows three small filaments in the NE but I didn't notice them at all.
There are some nice prominences today. Right before I went out I noticed a huge active spray prominence on the NW solar limb on the SDOAIA304 image. I rushed the scope out to catch sight of it. The SDO and GONG shows the prom on the limb above or in close proximity to the departing AR12885. Even in single-stack I could only see the base of it and nothing more. That disappeared in a very short time. I think I got out a bit late to catch the main show. This event happened quickly and was then largely pulled back into the Sun. Later I see a bright low lying prom in the area of AR12885 at the NW limb that is really bright and changes from minute to minute raising sharp spikes while others decay. The SW has a decent prom with a brighter northern part. The SE has a " fuzzy loop " with a wispy thin prom below. The NE shows a nice grouping of proms that show decent detail even in this substandard seeing. A fairly bright northern component followed southward by fuzzy filamentary smoke. Below this I can see what appears to be a detached prom.
The spicule layer is visible on the limb and and despite the seeing the mottles are easily visible.
Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 62.5x ( WL )
I can only see three areas on the photosphere today. AR12882 in the NW as a single large umbra/penumbra spot with visible faculae. AR12885 is too close to the NW limb to see. I can also see a low contrast patch of faculae in the SW and another patch of faculae in the NE.
Granulation is barely visible at session beginning and invisible at the end.
Carpe Noctem!

Re: October 15 2021 Observations
Hi James,
As always, an interesting description. It's a pity that you missed the fireworks a bit. I wonder if it could be AR12885? He is just over the horizon now.
Nice photo with telescopes and a house. I see green leaves, and we have almost all the leaves have fallen.
Ivan

Re: October 15 2021 Observations
As Ivan has just mentioned, whether that prom/flare is from 82 or 85 is not known by me, except that 82 still remained active at that point.
Thanks James and the greenery is still looking good, but here as Ivan has said.
Cheers
Terry
ps the new mini-obsy is very near completion, before re-installing the mount and scope for trials from there..

Re: October 15 2021 Observations
Ivan,
I think it was from AR12885 as it's location was at or very close to the location of that active region at the time. The house is mine and while it is still mostly green here it won't be much longer. The oaks in the image hold their leaves green later than some of the other trees around here. The Tulip Poplars have already lost half their leaves.
Terry,
Post some images of your mini observatory when you get it finished.
James
