October 17 2021 Observations. Calm Sun but a new SunSpot!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 16:15 to 17:31 UTC. Clear skies with below average seeing. The temperature is 56F ( 13.3C ). Breezy

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 42x and 50x ( Ha )
Today there are no obvious plages or active regions on the chromospheric disc. I had to use GONG imagery and a lot of etalon tweaking and sweet-spot finding to see what few details that were to be seen.

AR12882 has now disappeared around the NW limb carrying it's large spot with it outta sight. The only plagelike details I can see are a couple of light spots in the lower NW quadrant and a third in the lower NE quadrant west of a line up of three filaments located there. I would have never found these tiny plages in the SMII60 and in the 90 it was a challenge. The only other two " ruffleages " I can see is in the SW quadrant near the limb, this one isn't that difficult, and another near the SE limb.

Several filaments are seen. Three lined up diagonally in a row in the NE. Two easy ones east of the CLM in the north. and a couple in the SW quadrant. I can see three in the SE quadrant as well.

All the brighter prominences line the western limb today. A trio in the NW with a fork in the middle one. A bright flat topped row central-west limb and three widely spaced ones on the SW limb. The southernmost one shows some fainter plasma north of a spiked top brighter part with two voids on it's south side. GONG CT shows this well too.

The mottles and spicule layer are visible today without difficulty.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 62.5x ( WL )
When one spot leaves it's replaced by another! Now that the spot of AR12822 has left the disc I see another new spot very close to the SE limb! Even at the very inclined angle it is being viewed at I can see that it is fully structured. It has both umbra and penumbra. It looks a bit smaller than the spot of AR12882 that has just left us. I can see an easy patch of faculae in the SW. A harder low contrast patch is also seen in the NE. Neither have any visible spots or pores to my scope. Surprisingly I can with certainty see a single facular spot near the north pole! Seeing is not that great so I am indeed surprised on seeing it! So 4 areas on the photosphere it is today! Still the Sun can hardly be called " active ".

The granulation is visible but soft.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks for your latest update James and even though I just had a quicky with SDO, I didn't notice the spot. so will look again.

Cheers

I caught it visually. When I first looked at the SDO images I missed it too!

Sounds like we both need new specs James.
But hey, it was a little dark and so close to the background black, that I suppose we can both be forgiven..

Cheers

ps Another day finishing-off the newbie obsy, but a couple of small snags will take one more day, before clearing-out all the tools and gear and re-installing the Vixen GP-DX mount and initially the Orion ED80 for the first trials, which might be on the Moon at first. Then when satisfied that the mount always goes straight from horizo0ntal/west and straight to the Sun and/or Moon (which it certainly seems to do immediately). Then over to the imaging-stages, which should not be a problem - obviously...
Something that you already may well know of is the "State of the Art" LED dimmable lighting-system which I'll explain shortly.

CLEAR SKIES

Terry,
At least I didn't miss the spot in the scope.

It sounds like your mini observatory is coming along well. As far as LED lighting goes I am familiar with many types, but not all.

Great report James, that is such good news to hear of another spot, even better that you spotted some polar faculae too :hamster:

You are welcome Mark. I did post a session report for the 18th as well. I hope your skies clear for you.

James, an interesting description, despite the rather calm Sun. We still have clouds, though by nightfall the sky is clear for three days in a row, but during the day there are clouds again.

I don't know how warm it is where you are but the solar heating of the day might be what is causing them. You are almost certainly cooler than what I am here.
