Sun FD in H-Alpha 18th of October 2021
Dear friends,
Todays Sun imaged through a thin layer of clouds. Only managed Ha before the clouds got to thick. :-(
FD image in H-Alpha using a Coronado 60mm/BF15 w/Beloptik ITF, stopped down to 50mm, Baader 35nm H-Alpha and ASI 178mm mounted on a SkyWatcher SolarQuest. Sun FD in H-Alpha 18th of October 2021

Very well done Arne. Very natural. Not over sharpened and evenly illuminated. I was able to see the majority of details shown in your images visually today.
Thumbs up!!

Re: Sun FD in H-Alpha 18th of October 2021
Arne,
I had forgotten that you live in Norway! I would love to visit Norway and Sweden. I would love to go to the north and see the wonderful boreal forests, the Fjords and the reindeer. I would love to pick Cloudberries and Lingonberries and I would especially love to see the northern lights. The Aurora Borealis!
You are a lucky person though it's northern latitude probably makes solar observing difficult, probably depending on how far north you live.
Blessings:

Re: Sun FD in H-Alpha 18th of October 2021
Thank you very much James and Stu!
James:
I'm located in the southeastern part of Norway about 40km south of our capital Oslo. However, even at my latitude of 60d north we usually only get to see a few good auroras each year during solar maximum. In order to see auroras on a more regular basis one need to travel further north with Tromsø being one of the ideal locations.
Living at my latitude certainly has it's pros and cons. During summer the days are really long and the twilight last through the short night (it doesn't get properly dark). Thus summer is a good time for solar observations, but nighttime observations are really not possible between May and August. Similarly, the short days and long nights makes solar observing difficult between November and March.
I can certainly recommend the Cloudberries and Lingonberries. The fjords and the mountains are a wonderful sight - both on the west-coast and in the north.
Best regards,
Arne

Arne,
SolarChat and the GONG Network and NASA's SDO are your friends during the winter season I bet!
I bet the day-night cycle of the seasons is really hard to get used to but you have probably always lived there so it's probably second nature to you.

James,
SolarChat, GONG Network and SDO are definitely my friends!
I don't think much about the day-night cycles or the long twilight. I'm more shocked when I visit low latitudes and it turns completely dark half an hour after sunset LOL.
Best regards,
Arne

Arne,
I can see you standing there thinking " Whoa, it got dark really fast! "
I would have guessed you would be quite adapted to the day-night cycle there. Have you been to the far north of Norway to experience the polar night or midnight sun?
Blessings,
James

Re: Sun FD in H-Alpha 18th of October 2021
James,
Yes, I've been in the northern parts of Norway in both summer and winter - seeing both the midnight Sun and the Aurora Borealis.
In November 2002 I went, together with some friends, to Tromsø (approx 70 degrees north) in order to see the Leonid shower that year. Travelling far north was necessary for it to be dark and for the radiant to be above the horizon at the predicted time for the peak activity that year. We were treated with a magnificent view of lots of meteors originating just above the horizon, travelling across the whole sky from north to south, on a backdrop of Aurora Borealis.
In June 2011 I went to Tromsø to se a partial eclipse of the midnight Sun. Here's a shot of this eclipse.
I've also been to Iceland on several occasions as well as to Svalbard (approx 75 degrees north) in order to see the 2015 total solar eclipse. Some pictures from this eclipse.
A couple of videos from that eclipse:

Re: Sun FD in H-Alpha 18th of October 2021
Arne,
You live in an absolutely beautiful part of the world. Your images show this. Viewing an eclipse during a midnight sun would have advantages. You wouldn't have to worry about it setting!
Have you seen the videos of Jonna Jinton in neighboring Sweden? Her work illustrating her life in such a beautiful place is outstanding. She seems to be a beautiful person both inside and out.

Blessings,
James
