October 24th in Ha

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

I was treated to clear skies Sunday morning which allowed some time at the scope to do some imaging. Fall weather has set in with light overnight frost and single digit air temps, but it has been overdue for some time. I has allowed a good portion of the crop harvest to be taken off in good conditions too, but today has been overcast with steady drizzle and a daytime high of 5-6C.

The first views of the sun through the double stacked LS80T showed a lot of potential targets for imaging, with AR2886 & 2887 showing nice detail, along with several filaments and prominences to add to the selection. Below is a full disk composite through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B180Ha and the ASI1600MM camera with a 1.6x barlow:
Full-Ha_10242021.jpg

The next image was made wit the camera settings adjusted to enhance the limb details, but with some of the contrast of the disk lost:

I switched over to the double stack mod on the Orion EON 130ED OTA and B1800Ha blocker, and used the ASI290MM camera and 1.3x barlow to image the active regions in greater detail. You will notice some of the disk images show much more contrast...which I can't explain. Part way though the image capture I heard a sound, and suddenly the tuning went off on the pressure tuned etalons. The noise may have been unrelated, but after re-adjusting the pair of pressure tuners the contrast was very much improved. I can't figure it out...it was holding steady prior to the change and held steady again afterwards. What ever the cause, I just wanted to explain why there was as much variability in some of the images.

As an example of the differences, the images below show the SE limb with AR2887/2888...the first image was pre-reset and the second was post pressure re-set...what ever changed, I like it ;)

AR2886 was imaged before the re-set as shown below. The post images did not co-operate with Photo Merge in Photoshop, so this mosaic is the only one that I have of the large area it occupies on the disk:

There was a small tuft of a dark filament and a bright region to the east of it, located on the disk north and east of the solar equator/Central Meridian, and is visible in the full disk image as well:

There were several groups of filaments, located on the SW quadrant and the North-NW part of the disk as well, and the prom captures were taken prior to re-setting the pressure tuners. The SW group are shown below:

The norther group included a filaprom that arched over the northern limb, shown below with two different processing routines:

That covers the session from Sunday...nice to have a good selection of features to work on ;)

Sunday afternoon was spent working on the observatory construction...have had to make several modification to the original plan, but progressing slowly :?

Brian,
Your image of that southern prom with the voids is probably the closest to the visual view I had of any I have seen posted. You must have imaged close to the time when I was at the eyepiece.

Some really beautiful images there Brian, especially after the reset! I hate it when things suddenly go funny, but at least it went funny the right way  All our tree leaves are just starting to turn coloured, we have the faintest blush of red coming on my Paper-bark Maple. I live in hope every year but usually we get a frost, all the tree leaves turn brown and drop off. I wish they would colour up quicker than they do. It usually takes well into November for our leaves to turn a good colour. At the moment our air temperatures are 15-18 degrees.

A wonderful series, Brian. I particularly like all the filaments you captured, there were quite a few when I was imaging on Sunday.

James, Alexandra, Maurits, and Franco...

Thanks everyone for your comments and feedback...always very much appreciated :bow

James, I checked the time on the images and the southern prom pair were taken at 11:16AM EDT.

Alexandra...where do you have the Paperbark maple planted on the property? I had to google it, and looks like a unique tree with the exfoliating bark...we only have white (Paper) birch that peel like that. The leaves look a little like oak as well, so I may have seen it in your yard but not thought more of it. Hope your fall weather favors some nice colors before the leaves completely fall!
