Oct 28th Flare Session - 1st Images

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

I was not aware of the flare yesterday when I arrived home for lunch, and with a lot of cirrus cloud of variable density blowing through I only planned to grab a full disk set o of images. Once I looked at the sun through the LS80T solar scope I surprised to see a lot of flare activity around AR2887...I though the new AR on the eastern limb was to be the watch to watch for

I did capture the full disk images, which are posted below:

With 6 AR's and one flaring as well as a nice collection of proms and filaments, I decided to try these with the Orion 130ED modded double stack scope. The brightness varied considerably as he clouds drifted past, but I think most of the captures came out ok. I have to go through them all yet, and have only processed two of AR2887 taken with short and long exposures to show the activity. Both were taken at approximately 16:48UT:

I will post the balance of the images later today or on the weekend when I have some free time.

Wow!!! well done Brian, what timing :bow :hamster: I love the image with the lightning streak through it :hamster:
Are these 15:48 or 16:48 UTC Brian? the X class was at 15:35 and yet these images look like they are the flare and not post flare an hour and a half later.

Well done Brian! :bow

Some high quality images. With far more extensive flaring than my earlier capture.
The sun would have been gone here, for a couple of hours, judging by your timing.
My last capture was at 14.12 [UTC] With no visible flaring at that time.
12.50 [UTC] was the last sign of AR2887 obvious flaring amongst my captures.
Some minor flaring, well to the south, at 14.08 [UTC]

Thanks everyone.

I posted (or thought I posted ) a reply to the timing question form Alexandra, but I don't see it...so I'll try again.

The full disk was imaged at 12:16 EDT and the close-up of AR2887 was captured at 12:48 EDT, which should convert to 14:16 and 14:48 UT. Based on these times was imaging a half hour past the big flare for the full disks and 70 mins later on the close-up.

I should have a few more close-ups in the images I have to go through yet. I'll post with the remainder of the images from the session.

Brian

I got the alert on my SpaceWeatherLive app at 15:30 UT. And of all days to be cloudy!!

Nice work Brian, The flare is large and bright in your images. I bet it was really easy visually too!

Hi James...

Yes, at the time I was out the flare regions looked like a pair of thin rivers of brilliant white light, running roughly parallel to each other. If I had more time I would have spent more time visually, but I was afraid the clouds would put an end to the ability to get useful images so I concentrated on imaging.

Almost like "rivers of lava" but considerably more dangerous in reality.
Very well captured Brian and I only missed a visual looksy an hour or so earlier from a friends house with his Lunt LS35T-Ha scope..

Maybe another chance, as have seen similar previously - some years back.

Cheers
Terry

Franco, John, and Terry...

Thanks for your comments...always appreciated :bow

Timing was very fortunate as I had almost decided against going out because of the cloud, and had I been able to leave work a bit earlier I might have caught the main event. Still, vary happy to get what I did, and the SPOD too ;)

Cracking images, Brian. Absolutely well deserved SPoD....congratulations.

I've been away for a few days attending a wedding and have been almost completely 'unplugged' so I'm just catching up on things. A lot of solar activity seems to have happened in the meantime with an X-class flare and incoming CME. I'll watch my magnetometer in anticipation. :)

Thanks for your comments Stuart :bow

I know that if any effect takes place form the CME impact you will be able to catch it day or night with the magnetometer!
