AURORA LIKELY TONIGHT AS FAR SOUTH AS 50N 30-10-2021
The forecast for the action of the AR2887 on Thursday provides for a likely Aurora display as far south as 50N, covering parts of Europe, Russia and of course Northern U.S. states and Canada too.
Whether this is viewable in the Southern Hemisphere is not clear, but hey, it has happened, but preferably during their night-times.
So a forecast time was from 1800GMT/Z through to Sunday, so keep an eye on https://virmalised.ee/aurora-live-cameras/ for their all-sky-cameras for these events and don't forget that if the northern sky appears to be glowing (even slightly) get your cameras to image such, as the various colours are more likely to be picked-up by such...
CLEAR SKIES towards the north and good hunting.
Terry

That's absolutely correct Alexandra and was about to say that Svalbard, Norway - All-sky-camera is clearly showing the beginning of the event at 21:00z
so a few hours later than forecasted, but Mark T., should be seeing this too..

try again for a live image from Norway as extra bright now at 2117z, but not attaching, so even though tried several-times, something is blocking em..

Re: AURORA LIKELY TONIGHT AS FAR SOUTH AS 50N 30-10-2021
Still just the start of things, Mark. The CME has yet to arrive. This activity is just a prelude. I’m seeing some increasing activity, but only because the interplanetary magnetic field has turned unsettled and southerly oriented. Wind velocity is increasing steadily, but there is no sign of a jump yet that would indicate the CME has arrived. I’d expect the sky to explode with light when it does.marktownley wrote: ↑Sat Oct 30, 2021 9:13 pm Clear skies yes, looks like it's starting. Live on the volcano cam here

Fiona is asleep
Here is a mobile phone shot through hotel window
We're on 9th floor, but I can see hints of green on the photo, and brightening of the sky in parts visually. Agree Stu, the CME hasn't arrived yet. I'm sitting tight in the warm till the fireworks start proper then i'll head out.
Got a transfer at 4am so it might be an all nighter for me

Thanks Stu for your comments, but in Norway a beautiful very bright one has passed almost overhead there, using
https://virmalised.ee/aurora-live-cameras/ and Svalbard, Norway - All-sky-camera image which still showing the same bright aurora.
The videos don't seem to show the bright green that the all-sky-cams show in Norway and now two or more cameras there...
Mark you are getting the fainter green image so well done for a starter...

Hi Terry...
i think I'll have to charter a jet to get above the clouds tonight...overcast and drizzle till tomorrow morning
I'll have to watch the Aurora cams and posts form those who do get clear views tonight.

Well unfortunately Brian for your weather the only way is by air and again unfortunately it's a tad late for me to get one of our corporate-jets to get to you and take you up for the views from Canada...
Have to rely on Mark T., and the internet for these live views and at present around 2200z Norway is seemingly get the best of the bunch - so far.
Cheers

The three Norwegian all-sky-cameras are the ones that seem to show the best of and currently at 2224z a new set of aurorae are starting-up with as many as three colours.

Sweden's cams at near midnight/z are starting to show the action, after their recent rain is clearing from the camera-domes.
All the house red-lights are now on here, so keeping a watch on our skies at around 51.something in S.E.England, but nothing yet and a camera is ready in case..

The above post should have read 2300z and not midnight, as well as it is Finland where images are starting to show and not yet Sweden.
These BST times are so confusing...
Got this 2305z Norway capture to show here at last.

Re: AURORA LIKELY TONIGHT AS FAR SOUTH AS 50N 30-10-2021
The best images from the three Norwegian cameras (as the one above) originate from :-
The Kjell Henriksen Observatory (KHO) in Svalbard, Norway. An optical observatory located at the archipelago Svalbard 1000 km north of mainland Norway (78degs N, 16degs E). Here more than 25 optical instruments as well as other non-optical instruments, are employed for research on the middle- and upper atmosphere.

Re: AURORA LIKELY TONIGHT AS FAR SOUTH AS 50N 30-10-2021
Well for a 3-hours session watching this Aurora which of course emanated from that fabulously interesting AR2887 on Thursday/28-10-2021, has certainly shown that not only the forecasts were correct for a direct hit upon the northern hemisphere at least, but still as I write this, is ongoing.
Timing was only about 3-hours later than that forecast and so-far has not reached our U.K. 51-degs North, but that still might change...
That is more than I can say for myself, as I have a lot to do on Sunday and although the night is still long here (thanks to the return of GMT), I still need my kip - sooner or later...
Thanks to The Kjell Henriksen Observatory (KHO) in Svalbard, the last images clearly show how much light-pollution has affected the previous images - also from Norway, where in the latter KHO images show all the stars and Milky Way quite clearly. Maybe their Sony a7s camera probably helps too.
The KHO website shows much more data, which may well be of interest to some.
So finally the last image at mid-night/z is attached.
Thanks for looking and a good-night from him !!

Re: AURORA LIKELY TONIGHT AS FAR SOUTH AS 50N 30-10-2021
I am enjoying all of this. I wish I could see it here. I am way to far south. Only a severe solar storm will drive aurorae to 35N latitude. I have however seen one here in my life. It was red. 1980 or 81.

Awake at nearly 2:00 in the morning checking in. Magnetometer data look great. I hope you’re getting a good show well into the small hours, Mark.
Good luck with the photos and animation.

Stu,
Can you post your magnetometer data after the CME has passed?

Re: AURORA LIKELY TONIGHT AS FAR SOUTH AS 50N 30-10-2021
Hi all,
Apparently this was NOT the main event. The main event might happen sometime today, according to Spaceweather.com
This particular one was the first of two CMEs heading our way. The second one is the main CME from the X-class flare on the 28th. Given how the skies lit up with the first, I can't wait to see the aurora images and magnetometer data from the second.
I've posted my magnetometer data in the appropriate section.

Re: AURORA LIKELY TONIGHT AS FAR SOUTH AS 50N 30-10-2021
Thanks James for the interesting vids and if as Stu has mentioned here and also seen on spaceweather.com, if there is more to come, then yes indeed could be a fantastic event to behold, but only if your weather allows.
So at least thanks to the available all-sky-cams etc., at least we can sit in comfort and see that as it happens - whenever.
Thanks Stu for the update and your efforts with the magnetometer data.
Thank You Franco and I agree for Mark to have some great views and images..

Re: AURORA LIKELY TONIGHT AS FAR SOUTH AS 50N 30-10-2021
Hi James...
I was curious to know if the aurora that you refer to in '80 or '81 occurred in the winter months?
I think the most impressive aurora that I ever saw would coincide with those years, and the event recall would have taken place in mid to late March. I had been boil sap in the sugar bush at the home farm (still in high school) and I had worked past dark, and I had a quarter mile walk back to the house while the aurora was in full swing. The aurora curtains were very bight, much like the full moon, and they were rapidly pulsing. The more intense pulses arched overhead and reached down near the feet of Orion.
Living in the country and always having an eye to the sky has allowed me to witness many aurora displays overt the years...I'm waiting to view more impressive ones
Brian

Re: AURORA LIKELY TONIGHT AS FAR SOUTH AS 50N 30-10-2021
Brian,
Yes it was in the winter months or maybe early spring,it was cold out. I just wish I would have written down my observations of it. I remember it being a red glow to the north. Even though I got into astronomy in 1978 I didn’t start recording my observations until 1982.

You have done very well James in learning your way through 43-years of astronomy and being able to describe what you see - they way you do.
Cheers
