M1.56 Flare in AR12887.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Tonight a little before 10:00pm local EST I got an alert on my iPhone's SpaceWeatherLive app concerning an ongoing solar flare. Going onto my PC I watched the spectacle unfold through GONG and SDO imagery. It's the only way possible since the Sun is below my horizon now. The GOES satellite data rates it as an M1.56 class. The flare blew like a slow-blow fuse and took some time to rise up and cool down. It shows that on the GOES graph. Even this way it's a spectacle to see though I would rather have had a scope on it. Maybe someone here on the sunlit side of our planet caught it and will post the report and/or images here.

The alerts came on SpaceWeatherLive several times during the flare's progress.

Goodnight.

James

P.S. I wonder if the high latitudes will see any aurorae out of this!?

Thanks for that confirmation James and I did think that AR2887 was a likely candidate for more flares, which for this one is not likely to give us any amount of Earth-activity...
