AR2893, AR2891, AR2887 | WL, CaK, HA | Nov 2nd 2021

Post by MalVeauX »

Heya,

I had a brief moment of good seeing (approx 1 arc-second average) and clear sky this late morning, around 11am Eastern time. Not much was popping off, but AR2891 has been so active so I was curious to see if it was going to toss a flare by chance. AR2893 hasn't been doing much but is a larger spot with a lovely light bridge. AR2887 is rounding the limb and is really interesting in Calcium with all the faculae around the area.

Very nice work, Marty!

Is your 100mm refractor a 102? Celestron?

Hi,

It's a Celestron Omni XLT 120mm F8.3 achroamtic doublet with a linear bearing GSO focuser; very inexpensive. I respaced the lenses with a larger air gap based on Mike Jone's best-guess calculations for best performance in near UV. I did this originally on my CR150HD (C6R), but reverted it for HA use and instead did this to my 120mm F8.3 instead. Then I typically mask it to 100mm F10 when seeing is only around 1 arc-second. When seeing is sub-arc-second, I open it up to the full 120mm and take it to F13 to F16 depending on seeing (but requires 0.6~0.8 arc-seconds, which I get sometimes, but not weekly).

Very best,

I like the lunt 60mod. It appears that you didn't use the 3d printed adapter?

I did use the 3D printed adapter at first, but then I re-measured everything and found I needed to take off more OTA. It needed -240mm to -265mm range back focus. So I had to take more off the OTA. At that point, I also looked into a metal threaded adapter as I found out the threaded end of the Lunt 60's chamber where the internal ERF threads on, is M50x1 threads (same as a PST). So I was able to get off the shelf M50x1 to M48x0.75 (2" standard) adapters and convert the Lunt etalon to a simple 2" metal nosed modular filter without any modding or destruction at all. And the M48x0.75 threading allows for standard 2" filters, so I could put a 2nd DERF on it too. So now I just insert into my focuser and it's ready to go, at full 150mm aperture. I'm using my big 214mm Aries DERF in a big 3D printed cell that masks it to 150mm clear aperture, F8 native, and that's the big white assembly seen in the image above. I'll post more about it soon in its own thread.

Very best,

These are absolutely magnificent Marty, I can see the Bright Ring around 2893 in both your CaK and WL images :hamster: :bow so this one is definitely one to add to the list.
