Aurora now

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi all...

If you have clear skies and a relatively northerly latitude, the northern lights are starting to put on a show. Space weather shows a large oval extending south of James Bay. Visible to the naked eye here at my place in S, Ontario Canada (44.5N).

James, that is the current KP Index now.

Visible to the eye, but not spectacular...camera picks the pillars up that extend through the Big Dipper. I just happened to noice the green glow on my way in form imaging Jupiter around 9pm.

This is the current forecast for the northern hemisphere.

Hope other can get a view too.

First pic I've pulled out of the series taken so far. Used a Ha modded Canon 60D, and 14mm Samyang lens at f1.4 (I think that is the wide open f ratio), and a single 15sec exposure.

That's really beautiful, Brian. Yellows and reds. It would take a Kp9 to give me any chance of seeing an aurora. A major solar flare and associated CME. One that big could be dangerous to the grid and orbiting satellites.

Thanks everyone for the support and feedback on this image...very much appreciated :bow

I was back out around 23:30 local time, but some thin cloud had blown in and the intensity of the aurora had subsided, so the later trip out didn't produce any images. I have several form this set that I will try to animate and post if I get something worth while.
