November 7 2021 Observations.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:40 to 16:40 UTC. The seeing is average to maybe a bit below. Clear skies. The temperature is 55F ( 12.7C ) Breezy.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 50x ( Ha )
I can right off see 4 active regions in the hydrogen-alpha chromosphere. AR12891 is visible in the far NW as an elongated plage with a small bright prominence north of it on the limb and a small filament just SE of it. AR12893 now in the NW Quadrant is seen as a single spot with scattered splotches of plage SE to NW of it. A single filament is seen just north of the spot. The system visibly disturbs the chromospheric mottling around it. AR12894 in the SE is visible as a spot with a long thin bent filament to it's SW. It's plage is seen to the east of the spot. GONG Cerro Tololo shows this well! A yet unnumbered 4th system is seen in the NE as a plage with a thin curved filament to it's north. Bright prominences lie close by on the NE limb.

Two filaments are easily seen near the NW limb. I can also see a couple of small filaments in the south-central area of the disc.

The Sun does have some decent bright prominences around the limb today. Three are seen in the SW. The northernmost of these rises up and curves gently south. GONG CT shows a fainter extension to it that I could not see in double-stack. South of it and the middle of the three is a faint tiny northward curving prom. Now the southernmost of these is the largest prom visible today. It resembles a bright pole, maybe a rocket! with supports on each side. The voids under each support can be seen. Now I am waiting for it to lift off!! The NE shows a couple of proms on the limb. I can see a couple of dark lines in the bigger northern component. The southern one is just a small one. GONG CT shows plasma connecting the two. It's too faint to see in double-stack. I can see a single bright but small prom on the NW limb.

The spicule mottles cover the disc where other features are absent, as usual. I did no notice the limb spicule layer but neither did I remember to look for it.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x and 83x ( WL )
I can see 4 active regions on the 540nm photosphere today. AR12891 in the far NW is easily visible as bright scattered faculae that shows a surprising amount of detail. I see no spots or pores within it though. The single spot of AR1893 in the NW shows decent detail in moments of better seeing. The umbra of the spot is divided into 4 unequal sections. I can also see intermittently the rayed pattern from center to edge in the penumbra. I can see a single pore to the NW of the bigger spot. The surrounding granulation can be easily seen but the seeing is not quite good enough to clearly isolate the individual cells. AR12894 in the SE shows a large spot bearing a penumbra and a tattered umbra. I count 9 pores east and southeast of it within the systems trailing faculae. I can easily see the faculae to the new system in the NE. SDO HMI continuum imagery shows a tiny pore in the southern part of the faculae. I could not see it or at least never could find it.

I see no bright ring around any of the two large spots today. They probably like faculae will require being close to the limb to see and then I'll have to deal with the sharply inclined viewing angle the spot will present. It's not gonna be easy but I am up to the November Challenge!

Carpe Noctem everyone. I hope you all have had a nice weekend. I have!

Blessings,
James

Thanks vm James and announced today that the N.E. faculae you have mentioned is now with several spots as AR2895.

Cheers

Lovely to read your report James and I am so glad you had a good weekend :) looking forward to your bright ring reports but I think you will only be able to see it at the limb when the faculae are visible.

I will from now on keep a close eye out when a sizeable spot is near the limb.

Thanks James, cloud and grey and autumn here now. I'm thinking of making me a pair of 'sun oculars' for those fleeting white light views that present themselves to me this time of year.

Mark,
A pair of white light filter equipped binoculars can sometimes save a day from clouds and being busy. They are easy to carry and quick to use. They’ll help keep you updated on where the spots are. They are certainly a nice backup alternative to a scope.

Thanks for the report, I completely agree with Mark, I made myself filters for binoculars and it’s not so sad.

They are very useful as quick-view instruments!

Precisely, besides, this is the only option to somehow stay in a hobby in the winter.

Can I add James (for Mark) that my Image Stabilized Binos which have the WL Filters ready for immediate attachment, add to the quick-view, as obviously without a tripod, the quivering (shaking) hands problem is eliminated.

But obviously at an extra-cost, compared to some Binos..
+++
Had a snag today with the new pc for the mini-obsy, as the astro-camera (one of three) that I wanted to use, where it seems that the maker-supplier has stopped the necessary download program and made it unavailable. Neither SharpCAp or FireCapture will show-up the camera.
I've tried transferring a working download from one of the other pc's without success, so will try out a cheepy camera tomorrow which does work on the new pc to see what the results could be with WL and Sodium.

I have downloaded ZWO ASI camera program (believed successfully) and can obviously pinch one of the three ZWO cams from the main obsy, but if that works, will order a fourth one for the mini-obsy.

No doubt the supplier-manufacturer wants people to buy their latest offerings, but in my case, I will never bow-down to such liberties, as there is around £500 worth of their scrap here now... Oh, I forgot the junkie-name as Altair...!!

Cheers
Terry

Terry,
Image stabilization certainly has it's advantages!
