Corona 2021-11-07

Post by george9 »

This is a new shot from today on Utsayantha Mountain.

Below you see a green 5303A single shot through the iPhone with some contrast adjustment, and then a shot from the SDO satellite. The green image was positioned based on looking where the proms were in H-alpha, not by trying to get the SDO to work. The two regions on the right line up pretty well. The region at 10 o-clock in the SDO was visible fleetingly and is present in another iPhone shot but just as a small glow. I confirmed the corona by shutting off the heater so the filters drifted off band and it disappeared.

In the eyepiece, the corona was just right there and my wife saw it easily, too. Literally, I had already heated the filter to 32C, I put in the eyepiece, centered the Sun, and there was the corona.

I also tried my ASI290, got the focus working, but just too grainy. I will try to process a minute-long video, but the problem is too-small pixels despite the 0.5 reducer and 10ms is all I can seem to configure the exposure length in the ASI app. Perhaps I need something like an ASI174 or an ASI1600 binned.

The proms were great and I also got an unfiltered view of the brightest prominence, seen at about the 5 o'clock position on GONG. Pink on a bluish-white background.

Two days ago on Long Island, I saw a short pyramid that I thought might be corona. I turned off the heater and it disappeared. I later aligned it, and it was right where SDO showed the most active region. So it is a possible sighting, but not definite. What is interesting is that it was at sea level. Friday had an unusually blue sky for Long Island.

I have switched to a double stack 5303 filter, and that I am sure helped.

George

It looks like you got it to me. The patches in the west you captured do like up with those in the SDOAIA193 image.

I crown you " King George of the Corona "!!! But " Corona " does mean " Crown " doesn't it!??

Congratulations.

James

P.S. And you used an iPhone to image it!

I think you are a bit better than a Jester. More like a count or a duke!
