November 9 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:46 until 16:35 UTC. The Temperature is 65F ( 18.3C ) at 15:30 UTC. The skies are clear with fair/average seeing.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see 5 active areas in the Ha chromosphere today. AR12893 is visible in the NW mainly by it's spot. NW of it near the limb I see a small plage. The SE shows AR12894 with it's spot and a plage bearing a filament just to the east of the spot. Another filament is seen just to the NW. AR12895 is seen in the NE with two spots and interconnecting plage. The SW has a small visible plage near the limb.

A nice hedgerow prominence lies on the NE limb. It has a somewhat " feathered " appearance. The NW limb is quite active. A fairly tall smoky wisp of a prominence is located there. South of it lies some activity on the limb, at one point a nice really bright two sectioned surge prom arose there but did not last long. A M-class flare followed by a nice set of post-flare loops occurred there after I had concluded the session. Thanks to flare alerts from SpaceWeatherLive I quickly whisked the SMII60 out for a look and was not disappointed. I will cover that in a separate post. The SW limb also has some fainter prominences.

The mottles were easy across the disc today and I could see the spicule layer on the limb.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x and 110x ( WL )
AR12893 in the NW shows a single spot bearing both umbra and penumbra. The umbra is split into three visible sections. I can see some radiating structure in the penumbra. The granulation is really easy and I can glimpse the individual granules in moments of good seeing. NW of AR12893 is a patch of faculae with two pores. I can see a small patch of faculae without pore or spot near the SW limb. AR12894 is seen in the SE as a single spot bearing umbra and penumbra. The umbra has a tattered projection on it's south side. I can see some radiating structure in the penumbra but it seems a bit more difficult than what is seen in the spot of AR12893. AR12895 in the NE shows two spots with a small number of pores between them. The two spots have small umbrae surrounded by faint penumbrae. Faint faculae can be seen surrounding the group.

I am late posting tonight due to observing so close to work and not having time to post at that time. Better late than never I say....

More coming!!

Carpe Noctem!

James

A nice couple of hours in the sun James, woke up this morning here to.... rain. Forecast is for grey and drizzle all the way out till the end of November here, and likely beyond. That's what happens when a new scope is purchased!

That's another way of putting it James, but if Mark is correct, I hope at least the night-sky will allow some Lunar imaging instead.

So as said elsewhere, "Virtual" viewing is still available with less work and time too..

That's a super report James :hamster:

What I find lovely about this group is the sense of closeness. We received the flare alert on the phone whilst we were having our evening meal last night (obviously dark outside). I thought to myself, oh good, this is just about the time that James does his observations, he will be really happy. I smiled to myself and imagined you sat there under the Sun half a world apart from me, but I was there too.

Thanks, Alexandra on you thinking of me. We are truly a solar community here and support each other with our own contributions via observing and imaging and using publicly available professional data too. I was glad and honored to be your eyes during this beautiful event.

And you are so very welcome.

James

I completely agree with Alexandra, when I saw the message about this flare, I also remembered about you James. I'm glad you saw this.
