November 7th Session - Part 2

Post by MapleRidge »

The first post of this session covered the disk features only, but I have now finished processing the proms which are posted below. These images used the same setup to image the proms as was used for the disk features... a pair of Lunt DSII etalons as a double stack mod to the Orion EON 130EDF OTA with an ASI290mm camera and 1.3x barlow. There were several small, faint proms that I did not image or captured poor quality data, so these are the better of the lot ;)

I'll start with the NW limb where there was a beautiful filaprom and proms to the north of AR2891:
N-Filaprom_13xOR130_2xDSII_v3.jpg
N-Filaprom_13xOR130_2xDSII_v3.jpg (258.34 KiB) Viewed 404 times
An arching prom was found on the western limb with some fainter structure visible:
W_Prom_13xOR130_2xDSII.jpg
W_Prom_13xOR130_2xDSII.jpg (42.19 KiB) Viewed 404 times
The next two images show the large prom and fainter extensions using two different exposures:

SW_Prom_13xOR130_2xDSII_v2.jpg
SW_Prom_13xOR130_2xDSII_v2.jpg (63.49 KiB) Viewed 404 times
Several small proms were found on the limb south of AR2894:
SE-Prom_13xOR130_2xDSII.jpg
SE-Prom_13xOR130_2xDSII.jpg (175.91 KiB) Viewed 404 times
The final prom image is from the NE limb where these were found near the newly arrived AR2895:
E-Prom_13xOR130_2xDSII.jpg
E-Prom_13xOR130_2xDSII.jpg (140.15 KiB) Viewed 404 times
These images complete the session form Sunday morning. I hope that everyone finds something interesting in the proms and disk images.

Nice work Brian. Your images show the details so big and large compared to how I usually see them.

Hi, Brian

Thanks for posting these close up images of the Nov 7 features.

I notice you mentioned a 1.3X barlow in your work, one I wasn't aware of before. the lowest strength barlows/telecentric I use are 1.5X but sometimes using them to gain a bit more amplification dims the image to a point where the shutter speed (already marginally long) becomes unuseable. A 1.3X barlow may be a better choice. Is the barlow you refer to a Baader 2.25X/1.3X version ?

Thanks everyone for your comments and feedback...always appreciated :bow

Lou, that barlow is a home brew using the lens out of an un-used barlow and placed it inside a 1.25" C mount camera adapter nose piece. It is placed much closer to the chip so it has a lower effective magnification. When I use it for full disk with the ASI1600MM and the Daystar tilt adjuster it is positioned further away for the chip so it winds up making a 1.6x factor. The ASI290 doesn't usually need the tilt adjuster so it threads in closer to the chip and makes the 1.3x factor.

It is much like the Baader Q-Barlow in operation...I just made it up before I knew about the commercial version.

I got the same large prominence (another post below). I also captured the very faint detail drifting above the prominence but you got a bit more extended detail. Good job. :bow Mine had quite fine detail in the prominence itself which was similar to what I saw visually....that was really a nice prominence. :bow2

Maurits and John...

Thanks for your comments on these images...always appreciated :bow

John, I saw you image earlier and thought I commented but must have failed to hit send. Your pic is very sharp as well. Different image scales will show different details and structure and with our global coverage we get to see the evolution of features as they are imaged by everyone here at different times of the day.
