November 14 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 16:12 until 16:46 UTC. The skies are mostly clear. Seeing is poor. The temperature is 45F ( 7.2C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 20x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see three regions of disturbance in the Ha chromosphere today. AR12894 in the SW shows a spot with a thin bowed filament to it's SE. The brightest part of the plage lies between them and it's small. AR12895 in the NW shows a bright plage that somewhat resembles the number 3. A nice dark curved filament lies NE of it. Another small filament lies SW of the plage. In addition to these larger numbered active regions I can see a tiny but definite plage in the SW quadrant just inside the limb just below the solar equator.

More significant filaments include two easy ones in the NE quadrant and a " three dots " filament in the NW.

There are a few decent proms today including a hedgerow on the SE limb with the northernmost one leaning south. Somehow it reminds me of a down feather. I see a single bright but small one on the NE limb. There are also some small bright ones close to the SW limb.

The mottles cover the solar disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 27.5x and 41.5x. ( WL )
I can only see two areas of activity on the white light photosphere today. AR12894 in the SW shows only a single spot with a double umbra surrounded by a penumbra shared by the two of them. I had to look close to see the double umbrae. I can see no other spot or pore there. I can see no faculae either. The only other area I can see is the new active region in the SE, AR12896. All I can see of it is a single spot very close to the limb and I have to look closely to see it. The SDO HMI continuum image shows a single pore in AR12895 but I cannot see that at all. The seeing is so poor that the limb shimmers and the granulation is invisible.

Carpe Noctem!

James

Thanks James and as you say AR2895 is disappearing, but the newbie is easy to see.

Cheers

GONG, SDO and SolarChat are very useful on cloudy days my friend.
