Solar Activity 14Nov.2021

Post by dccole9 »

It looks like CaK and White Light are showing signs of a new spot near the limb at about the 8 o'clock position. The seeing was horrendous here. I've also been having trouble getting decent contrast when dialing in the H-alpha pressure tuner. Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Chris

Very nice work Chris. That Lunt setup does quite well.

Are you single stacked or double stacked? Double stacking is a good way to increase contrast.

Beautiful set of images :bow :hamster:

For a single stack that is not bad contrast, can you describe the problem a little more?
Do you reset the pressure tuner knob before you start to tune each time?

Excellent presentation Chris.
Possibly a tad more contrast at the processing stage, but as you say about the seeing conditions, may not be the answer.

Nice images, Chris.

Resetting the pressure tuner can help, as Alexandra suggests. You might also try building up a full disk as a mosaic since your quadrant images look quite uniform. As for increasing contrast, it can be accomplished during processing, but double stacking is a better option.

All,

I was afraid some of you would say to try a double stack. I hope to get an extra element in the future, but not until I've reached the limits of what the current setup can do.

Below was probably the last decent capture of h-alpha I've had in awhile. This was back in September:

ImageSolar Activity 11Sept2021 by Chris Cole, on Flickr

ImageAR 2866,2868,2869 11Sept2021 by Chris Cole, on Flickr

On this day, the sun was definitely higher so seeing was probably not as much of an issue. I also used an ASI174mm instead so the active region image required a barlow. I'm preferring to use the ASI183mm these days since the pixels are less than half the size of the ASI174mm allowing me to do a full disk capture and skip the barlow step.

I know that even illumination of the disk is not possible but you may notice the uneven illumination of the full h-alpha disk varies between the days. I also know that when adjusting the pressure tuner, this "uneveness" occurs throughout the disk. Could this be a problem? Is using the ASI183 a bad fit for this setup? I do unscrew and reset the pressure tuner during every session.

Thanks for all the help,
Chris

Thanks Chris for the added images of the 11th September'21 and these are very similar to the first sets, where the presentation is excellent and nice to see "side-by-side".

Looking at these on Flickr, certainly shows much more detail and no suggestions, other than trying different Contrast and Brightness settings in processing, which you might find pleasing.

Nice shots Chris! Try moving the Ha image around the fov of the 183 chip to find the point where it is most evenly illuminated.

These look good Chris, contrast looks right for a SS but as others have mentioned you can adjust that more in processing. Mark has a good suggestion about moving the image around in the FOV of your camera to get the most even illumination and you can crank up the gamma to center the brighter portion of the disk and then turn off gamma or crank it back down to capture the image.

Thanks for the suggestions. It hadn't hit me to move the disk around on the sensor for even illumination considering I do that already for CaK

Thanks again
