November 17 2021 Observations. Nice NW prom!
Session time is from 16:29 to 17:17 UTC. The skies are clear with fair/average seeing. The temperature is 66F ( 18.8C )
Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 50x, 64x and 100x ( Ha )
I can see four areas of activity in the solar chromosphere today. AR12897 in the NE shows a plage which brightest portion is SE of a visible spot. AR12895 in the NW is visible as a plage with a filament at each end. AR12894 in the SW is just a mere disturbance that takes a close look to see. AR12896 in the SE is visible as a spot amid a disturbed chromosphere. It hardly has a plage at all! I can see a fine filament SE of the spot.
Filaments are seen in several areas around the disc. The northern hemisphere has a number of filaments including a nice dark one in the NE that looks like " Nessie " emerging from the chromosphere. The SE has a filaprom on the limb and another filament just inside the limb south of the filaprom.
I see three prominences on the limb today. A really nice bright one that takes magnification well is located on the NW limb. I can see striations and small voids within it. It's shape changes visibly a little in the time I observed. At one point it looked like a long thick necked bird with a little beany head! South of it lies a dimmer pointy pyramid shaped prominence. The SE has the " Kitty Cat " filaprom! I can see small elongated voids within it. I see the prominence being shaped like a cat with it's head facing south. The voids are it's stripes and the filament part of it is it's tail resting on the Sun! The funy thing is Lily, my fuzzy feline companion was under my observing chair at the time. I said " Hey Lily, there's a fiery feline on the Sun today! " As usual, prominences are seen in single stack a bit better than in double stack.
The mottles are very easily seen across the solar disc and the spicule layer is easily seen too, even some of the emergent spicule blades themselves.
Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and Baader 540nm filter. 55x and 110x ( WL )
I can see four areas of activity on the photosphere. AR12897 in the NE shows a single spot with a ragged umbra surrounded by a penumbra. Two tiny pores are visible with a close look. One just north of east and the other SE of it. Faculae stretches halfway to the limb from the spot. All I can see of AR12895 is a patch of fairly bright scattered faculae nearing the NW limb. At first glance all I can see of AR12894 in the SW is faculae near the limb. However with a close look at 110x I could see a spot VERY close to the limb. If SDO HMI would have not keyed me off to it being there I would have not specifically looked for it and would have looked completely overlooked it! I would have missed it entirely if I would have used the Orion70 today. AR12896 in the SE shows a single spot with a light bridge into the umbra. The penumbra is visible as well. I see no faculae to this system.
I can see the granulation easily but the seeing is not quite good enough to pick up the individual granules themselves. I cannot see details in penumbrae either. The light bridge in AR12896 was definitely visible but took magnification and a close look to see.
The music for today is Deep Venture by Lars Leonhard.

Thanks James and much as I saw earlier today.
Have done some visuals with the Sodium and will let you know that tonight or tomorrow.
Cheers

Glad you got a report in James, many thanks! There's plenty to see on the sun at the moment, just wish I could see it
Keep the reports coming. Our cats are 'fair weather' cats and much prefer the warm and cushions of inside to the damp and grey of outside that we have this time of year.

Mark,
Our cats are inside-outside cats. But they don't like cold rainy weather either. They come into the more comfortable inside where it's warm and dry. Cats aren't dumb! They know what's good for them and they certainly know where the food bowl is!!
They make good observing buddies too!

Lots of detail here, James. Nice to read about what I cannot see with the weather we’re having here.

Thanks and welcomes everyone. Today I had a lot of clouds but still got an observation in.

Hi James, great sighting story. I liked the comparison with Nessie and the fire cat. Glad that you continue to observe, I wish you good weather!
