November 18 2021 Observations. Snaking SE filament!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 17:45 until 18:15 UTC. Intermittent. Mostly cloudy skies. The seeing looks average. The temperature is 66F ( 18.8C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
The first things I noticed on the Ha disc today is the dark snakelike filament near the SE limb followed by a nearby prominence that looks like a windswept tree with the winds blowing in from the north. Southwest of it lies two other filaments and some fine low hairlike proms on the limb. NW of these structures lies AR12896 which shows a faint plage with a spot and fine filament. The NE quadrant shows AR12897 with a fairly bright plage east of a sunspot. Filaments are widely scattered across the northern hemisphere with one especially dark and easy one in the NE quadrant. The SW is void of any filaments or active regions.

Outside of the windswept tree prominence on the SE limb and " fine hair " prom south of it I see a couple of other fairly small ones on the NW limb and a couple of smaller fainter ones north of the tree prom.

The mottles are easily visible across the disc today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
AR12896 in the SE is visible only as a single spot. As it is fairly small I have to look closely to see the penumbra. The same holds true for AR12897 in the NE, fairly small single spot that takes a close look to see the penumbra. I do see a trace of faculae east of the AR12897 spot. All I can see of AR12895 is an easy patch of faculae at the NW limb. I see no trace of AR12894 in the SE. It's probably on the limb.

The fine solar granulation is visible without difficulty today.

Carpe Lumen

Off to work I go.... :-(

James

Thanks James for the report.

Today only early Sun-shine which I missed and otherwise not a good day for me.

Thanks for your update James!

Cloud and rain here, so I'm relying on member posts to see what going on above the cloud.

Arne,
I am glad my observational posts are not boring. That's nice to hear!

Terry,
I had to go get two of our younger cats from the vet, being spayed and getting their shots and due to that I missed the sunniest part of my day as well. In the early afternoon I did catch enough rays for a report but during the afternoon it clouded up and rained a little. Now after midnight it is clear and cold. A lunar eclipse should begin soon.

Brian,
That's what we are here for, to observe, image and report for all to see and that's especially useful to those who are under clouds. It's always sunny somewhere on SolarChat!!

That’s one advantage of working evenings, 2nd shift. It gives me the mornings and early afternoon to observe the sun. Day jobs, especially in the winter will nearly destroy an observing programme.

I wish you luck Ivan. I know the Sun is terribly low now where you are.

Thanks for the report James, glad you got a viewing in! I'm hoping the skies here clear soon, it actually looks like it will for a change... Hopefully should get some moon viewing in with the new 100/800 later and then some solar tomorrow...
