November 24 2021 Observations. Visible band of activity in the South.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 16:34 to 17:08 UTC. Clear skies with seeing a bit below average. The temperature is 45F ( 7.2C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
The Sun is showing increased activity in Ha today. 4 areas of activity are visible on the disc today. The new AR12898 in the SE is the easiest to see of these appearing as a bright plage. NE of it in the NE quadrant near the limb lies another harder to see disturbance with an associated filament at it's NW edge. AR12897 in the NW takes a closer look to see but is visible as a pale plage. AR12896 is a bit more difficult in the SW. I can pick up a light band of activity going from AR12898 in the SE through/under the big filament to AR12896 in the SW visually in my SMII60 without much difficulty. It shows splendidly in the GONG images and those taken by Pedro Re' earlier today. I was really surprised how well I could pick it up visually.

The big dark filament in the SW is still holding together well though I don't see it's dark smaller SE neighbor that was there yesterday.

I notice a faint but mottled prominence on the SE limb and a number of others on the NE limb.

The mottles are visible across the disc without difficulty today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I got 4 areas of activity on the WL photosphere today. AR12898 in the SE is by far the easiest with it's new spot group. I can see 6 spots in the group. Only a trace of faculae can be seen. I can see another single tiny spot well NW of AR12898 just south of the disc center. A patch of faculae is seen in the NE. I see no spot or pore within it. I cannot see anything of AR12897. SDOHMI shows a pore there but I cannot see it. AR12896 is barely visible by faculae. SDO HMI continuum imagery shows a pore there too but I cannot find it visually.

The fine granulation is visible today without too much difficulty.

Carpe Lumen!

James

P.S. Notice the band in the southern hemisphere so apparent in Pedro's image. And the filament southeast of the big one is largely absent in the GONG Cerro Tololo image but still present in Pedro's image from earlier today. Did it lift off?

Thanks Pedro!!

Thanks for the report James. It looks like you are right, at least on the animation of the gong, it looks like that.

Excellent examination of the filaments, it does look like one part has lifted away and I swear that the remaining part looks shorter ;)
