Sun in Ha and CaK 25th November 2021

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi all,

A few images in Ha and CaK from this morning. The forecast was for blue skies....well, that was partly true. The sky was blue for the most part, except for haze and thin clouds right where they were not wanted; right in front of the Sun.

Anyhow, I did manage a couple of FD mosaics and even a close view of AR12898 on my 150 mm mod.

First up are my CaK FDs:

...and then my Ha FDs:

Finally the closer view of the newest active region with degrading seeing:

I did try to make a mosaic of the active region, but only two out of four panes turned out okay with the other two a bit blurred. Oh well...

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Good work, Stu! The images turned out well despite the haze and thin clouds!

Thanks Stu for your excellent images.

AR2898 seems to be flaring - so now with up to ten-spots it could well prove very interesting...

These are masterpieces Stuart :bow :hamster:
I had a meeting at work and the Sun was so low and bright they were complaining and wanting to put the blinds down. I protested, but they couldn't get the blinds to work anyway  so I was enjoying the Sun's rays instead.

Hi Stu,

Very nice session!.

Albeit... "Finally the closer view of the newest active region with degrading seeing".

This is a common mistake. High res imaging should be done FIRST! Then all kinds of FDs, which can be good even in not so good seeing.

Valery, I agree with you. Often at the beginning of a session the seeing is better as the air heats up as the day wears on. This of course applies to visual as well. Do high rez or view with higher magnification at the beginning of a session for the seeing usually degrades later on. I have learned this by experience.

I like it…your colleagues would just have seen a bright light. You, on the other hand, have a deeper understanding, more insight and absolute appreciation of what the Sun actually is. No doubt flares, filaments and proms were coming to mind as you sat and absorbed the majesty of our star. :seesaw

You are absolutely correct, of course, Valery, and usually hi-res does come first with FDs as a follow up. However, on this and a few other occasions I had no real expectations, or intention, to get out the big gun, but I couldn’t resist when I saw the bright active region and wanted a closer look. I figured I’d either get a good result or not. In the end it turned out reasonably okay. With a lower Sun, down my street, with houses and a main road close by hi-res is an even bigger challenge at this time of the year.

Stu:
Beautiful session, thanks for sharing.
BTW, I start my sessions with the Solarmax 90-DS and if I see that the seeing is regular to good, then I also connect the heater of the old Daystar T-Scanner that takes about 15 minutes to get to the correct temp on the 102mm Stellarvue working at f/28, then finally I use the 102mm f/9 Meade refractor with the CaK mod.
If I see that the seeing during the Solarmax 90-DS is not regular to good, then I do not even try with the rest of the scopes.
Best regards.
Eric.
