November 27 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time was 16:00 to 16:30 UTC. The skies were clear with seeing a bit below average . The temperature was 53F ( 11.6C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
A band of activity can be seen across the southern half of the disc at the " temperate " latitudes. Three dark filaments are seen in the line in the SE. AR12898 at the Central Longitudinal Meridian is seen as a bright plage with a spot in it's western extremities. Immediately to it's SW lies AR12900 visible as a plage with a spot in it's NW corner. Just SW of it lies a double filament. Further SW lies a big dark filament which is now approaching the SW limb. It has a soft and fuzzy look. Just NW of it lies a double plage. AR12899 is the westernmost of these with an unnumbered plage just to it's east. A dark filament is seen in the far SW, well south of the line of activity north of it. I can also see some filaments in the far SE very near the limb.

The northern hemisphere shows little activity, lacking the band of disturbance seen in the south. One disturbance can be seen in the NE which contains a single thin filament. East of it lies a vertical line of three filaments.

Prominences are small and relatively few and I paid them little attention in double-stack.

The mottles are easily seen across the solar disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I could see four areas of disturbance on the solar photosphere today. AR12898 at the CLM appears as a spot with a light bridge and penumbra. Just SW of that spot lies another spot with a tiny penumbra surrounded by a large penumbra. It takes a close look to see the umbrae and light bridge. East of these two spots lies a hooked line of pores. Just SW of AR12898 lies AR12900 with a dumbbell shaped umbra surrounded by a penumbra. A small dark spot with a fuzzy spot next to it is seen SE of the main spot. That fuzzy spot is shown by the SDO to be a cloud of unresolved pores. SDO also shows another line of pores just east of the spot that I could not resolve. I see twin faculae in the SW near the limb. The westernmost of these is AR12899. SDOHMI continuum high resolution images show two small pores here, one above the other. I could see neither visually. In the far NE almost on the limb I saw a small spot with some faculae present. It's small but at least it's something new! SDO HMI imagery shows some faculae in the SE as well but I did not notice it at all.

Granulation is visible but is a bit soft.

Carpe Noctem!

Nice to read the report James, Hoping I may get some sun later on today... 2c here today, and the remnants of yesterdays snow have iced up now, looks like it's going to stay cold for a day longer here before conditions return to more like what you had above.

Good luck on the cold snowy icey temperatures you guys. I am cloudy so far this morning so it doesn’t look good for observing.

James

Thanks buddy. By Tuesaday it will be 10c warmer than now so I reckon we'll be back to the grey and damp again. I think for the next couple of days i'll be mooning if the weather allows.

Lovely report James :hamster: I was hoping to see the string of filaments myself but the forecasted Sun never showed up and we got snow instead ;)
