Here is an amazing animation made with adaptative optics at Big Bear anda TiO filter :

It is completely mesmerizing ...

Enjoy !

TiO. Titanium Oxide line? 705.7nm is in the deep red or near infrared if my understanding of the spectrum is right. Awesome video. Aperture and good seeing rules!!!

Does anyone make a TiO filter for amateur use? Of course those here with SHGs should be able to image this spectral line? Does it being in the near IR present any problems?

P.S. It looks like our own Mark Townley has done it! https://brierleyhillsolar.blogspot.com/ ... 706nm.html https://brierleyhillsolar.blogspot.com/ ... ength.html and https://brierleyhillsolar.blogspot.com ... ember.html

Without using a 'proper' ultra narrow band filter any longer wavelength filter will give similar results.

I've got a TiO filter too, I should use it more, but it does make the image very dark so have to increase the exposure a lot.

Mark and Alexandra, where did you get yours? Baader doesn’t seem to carry them and I couldn’t find them on Omega Optical’s website.

It was Omega Bob I think, but years ago. Like Mark says, just use a regular dark red James.

The TiO filter combines :
- the benefit of a G-band filter => you can see the intergranular bright spots,
- the benefit of near-IR filter => the seeing is improved, and the umbra of spot is not very dark, so it is easier to see the umbral dots.
The downside is that the resolution is reduced. So it is more relevant for large size solar telescopes (say > 300 mm).
Bandpass should be < a few nm.
If you be most usefull for a big Dobson equiped with a large size Astrosolar ND 3.8 (which are unfortunately no more available ...).

I have a 305mm Dobson.
