Solar images in Ha and CaK 2nd Dec 2021

Post by Carbon60 »

Some images from this morning in Ha and CaK with lovely blue sky, but below average seeing.

First up are my CaK FDs in mono and colour. The two distinct bands of activity in the northern and southern hemispheres are plain to see across a tilted equator, although it appears that the majority of the action is heading for the western limb with little else new coming from the east (maybe over the horizon??).

In Ha I really struggled. I continue to use my triple stacked setup, but I don't think it's ideal at this time of the year with the atmosphere causing a loss of definition, or maybe that's just an excuse. In any case the images lack the crispness of images captured earlier in the year and tend to get over processed to try to force some detail. I think tuning is an issue as well with these.

I started the session using my 150mm mod although, again, the seeing conditions weren't really up to it.

Thanks for looking.

Very nice work Stuart. It looks like the Sun has calmed a bit since yesterday.

These are great Stuart :hamster: :bow I think viewing the Sun is always a struggle at this time of year and I expect the seeing is bad as the Sun is so low on the horizon. I enjoyed the views though :) I've been working from home today but way too busy to stop and do solar at lunch :( I have noted today that the sun is so low from where I sit in the upstairs bedroom that the usual 3pm blinding me hasn't happened today, the Sun was behind the cactus plant on the windowsill, that is low!! blocked by a tiny cactus plant. We sometimes forget just how low our Sun gets in December. It just hovers at 12 degrees above the horizon at midday and much lower for the rest (well here in Cheshire).

For poor seeing those shots look great! I particularly like the close up of the filament!

Hi Stuart,
For the activity today/2nd, it has been rather quiet from late, with two of the five AR's having diminished - leaving just three (and two of those are tipping over the S.W. border soon.

Considering that you have captured very well what surface-detail is available and very well too.

There does appear a little action over the Eastern-border, but doesn't yet look too-promising.

Thanks for sharing
Terry

Hi

I had a nice view of your last H-Alpha prom with the 90mm F6.7 and Chromo Quark 4.2x with Celestron 40mm Symmetrical eyepiece.

Cheers. Andrew.

I think you did extremely well in those conditions, Stu. The Ha is the only one that shows a bit the poor seeing but still looks great, all others are mint. Beautiful.

Hi Alexandra,
Low indeed… the good thing is that we don’t have long to wait before the winter solstice :)

I forget how far north the United Kingdom is. Considerably further north than my 35 degree north latitude here in NC. And I complain about a lower sun!

You can complain about your lower Sun James, but the only thing you can do is either move well-north and see what we have to put-up with at above 50N.
Or move south and see what 0-degs north or south has for it's overhead benefits, including straining your neck at times and having to sit on the ground to get a view from a long-scope's E.P.

Also what about Sun-burn on top of the brain-box :?:  :?:

So what is the best/happiest medium for Solar-viewing, albeit imaging may be a tad better... ??? :?:

They came out well and you saw the sun Stu, which is always a bonus. I'm hoping for some over the Christmas period, we're off to our regular spot on the boat, and with it's low southern horizon i'm hoping for clear skies. Thanks for the card from you both btw :)

Sound idyllic, Mark. Fingers crossed that you do actually get some clear skies……and you’re welcome :)

I like all these images. Especially with DS on the 150mm refractor.
