December 3 2021 Observations. Horse and Rider Prom!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 16:42 to 17:31 UTC. The skies are clear with just below average seeing. The temperature is a balmy 71F ( 21.6C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see five areas of activity in the Ha chromosphere today! At first I could pick out only two but a little etalon tweaking and finding the sweet spot enabled me to find the others shown on the GONG image. The almost gone AR12898-900 complex at the SW limb shows a double plage. Northeast of it in the NW quadrant I can easily see the plage of AR12902. Due east of it near the CLM I can see the low contrast scattered plage of AR12901. Due south of it lies the low contrast plage of AR12903. I can also hint a disturbance in the chromosphere in the SE quad that has an associated filament.

A few filaments are around the disc to be seen. Two easy ones in the SE with one being quite long. 4 small ones in the SW and one in the NW. The NE has an easy filaprom on the limb!

All the prominence activity that I can see is on the eastern limb. The SE limb has a bright prom that to me looks like a horse and rider silhouette. Complete with the horse's head and neck facing south, legs, drooping tail and rider on it's back! It's the Rider in the Sky riding the solar prairie! The NE shows three proms. The lower one I see as a bright low dome.

The mottles are easily seen and cover the solar disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see four regions on the white light photosphere today. The AR12898-900 complex at the SW limb shows a patch of faculae with two spots that take a close look to see. The NW quadrant shows a single spot associated with AR12902. The high resolution SDOHMI continuum image shows 4 pores NE of it but I cannot pick them out visually. I can see a patch of faculae to it's west. I can also faintly see a patch of faculae near the SE limb. SDO HMIc shows a large pore there. I could not see it.

The fine granulation is visible though not exceptionally well.

It's Friday!! I wish everyone here a happy and sunny weekend.

James

It looks as if we can all go on holiday soon James, as the disk and even proms have certainly receded - leaving not much to savour.
Perhaps we can take-up "horse Riding" :o (actually perhaps not as I had a serious riding accident in 1990, which cost me my valuable job in aviation)... :beanie:

Terry,
Back in my teens I rode a lot. I had a pony and my neighbor had a horse and a pony. Her and I spent quite a bit of time riding. Later my mother remarried and her husband had three horses and frequently attended horse shows. I did ride a few times in my 20's and 30's. But I haven't been on a horse now in close to 20 years. I wonder if it's like riding a bicycle!?

I did get stepped on and drug off under trees a few times. No fun. But I sustained no serious injuries. Riding can be dangerous that's for sure!!

I think that was a " one horse prom "

Thanks James for your interesting version of riding horses(neigh pones even). Yes was much fun and as you say can be dangerous too.

So I carried on with the flying instead, which as long as one obeys the rules can and should be safer...

Not really any similarity to bike-riding, but I doubt whether you will forget either of these activities...

I considered trying for my general aviation pilot's license too back in the late 1990s. I have always liked airplanes as well. I checked out a local flight school and delayed it due to cost. I never went back and did it. Now it's twice as expensive as it was then.

It might be a cloud out today. So far I have overcast skies.

Thanks for the report James :bow

Cloudy and snow here today so no observing.

My wife had a horse when we first married...it was around for many years after, but with no where to keep it that was practical it was hard to justify keeping. I stayed at my dads with the dairy cattle for a few years but she eventually gave it up. I rode it a bit, and was thrown a few times too ;)

I'm a complete horse freak, my two favourite animals are horses and rabbits. I used to ride all the time as a teenager but not since my last Iceland trip in 2004. I can't afford, let alone have anywhere to keep a horse. When I jumped on in Iceland it was like riding a bike, you don't forget. The horse was going backwards forwards and everywhere. Everyone was saying, how do you do that? They are amazing intelligent animals and can remember more verbal and action codes than a dog.

Anyway, wonderful horses aside, you need to take a photo of a Christmas tree prom for me James, not horsey ones

Alexandra,
Not rats!?

I agree horses are very intelligent animals and in many ways are comparable with dogs. We had pigs too. I think in many ways they are smarter than both horses and dogs. Pigs are damn smart, and we eat them! I think humanity as a whole is an arrogant species that vastly underestimates the intelligence of other animals. My cats often amaze me with the things they do, the way they communicate with us and other cats and how well they learn. My daughter calls me the " Cat Whisperer ". :cat

I need to image some more. It's been harder for me to do anything lately with present in-house company and the cold weather plus low altitude sun. I had thought of that too. Christmas tree prom!

Well I can only add, that my German Shepherd would usually run along-side nag and me, especially whilst riding on Dartmoor (well away from road-traffic), but sometimes finding that we were at a higher-height than some of military aircraft very low-level training there. Great fun, but best of all when crossing a particular river-stream before returning to the stables, Zara (dog), would seem to hesitate before getting wet. :!:

Eventually when she realised that we were on the other-side of the water and about to go home without her, :movie she would suddenly immerse herself in the stream and then seemingly deliberately shake the wet all over Bertie (Irish-Draft-nag) and me.

Fortunately when I had the serious riding-accident on the same moors, Zara was not with me, as she was left at the stables and I was riding one of two Arabs and going for a fast gallop with one of the stable-girls on the second-Arab !! Unfortunately my Arab spooked at an ancient monument-site and it was obvious that around 30-MPH, I would not be staying in the saddle. :movie With some preparation to be de-mounted rapidly, I was thrown onto Granite Rocks, causing several breaks, fractures and dislocations. (not to those rocks - I suspect)...

Oh dear, after two-hours uncomfortably laid-out, the arrival of an ambulance-crew, realised that one of those military-airborne facilities was needed to get me the five-miles to the waiting ambulance...

I paid the price, by hundreds of thousands of ££££££££ and decided enough was enough, so started flying again instead - eventually...

So in answer to both James and Alexandra - Q. which are more intelligent, Horses, German Shepherd-Dogs are me as a humanoid :?: :?: :?:

A. Zara for staying in the stables - I guess... :bow

Happy Days
Terry

Terry,
My mother and Rick, her 2nd husband had two Arabians. Beautiful and spirited they were. Their third was an Appaloosa.

Ancient monument site?! Sounds interesting.

That accident certainly sounds very unpleasant. I am glad you weren't alone and had the stable girl with you.

Yes indeed James, Arabs (as you say as "spirited") can be an understatement, as I had not converted to them on that day, as my normal ride "Bertie" had gone lame, so the change from an Irish Draft might have something to do with the cause of the accident.

On the moors at Dartmoor in Devon/S.W.England, which is a very large expanse of wilderness, with a large number of 2,000+ year old settlements, where many can still be easily seen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dartmoor simply explains much more and notably about its' Granite Rock surface as well the numerous ancient-monuments there. A fascinating place for walkers/hikers and those interesting in archeology too.

Prince Charles owns the bulk of Dartmoor and by coincidence he also had a serious horse-riding accident whilst playing in a Polo match just a few months after mine, also causing some of the same injuries as mine... As far as I know, he gave-up playing Polo after that accident and I gave-up horse-riding completely, but still love horses and did take-up photographing horse-shows for while afterwards...

I have a permanent wrist-injury and disability of my right wrist which can cause problems occasionally...

WoW, Terry. Dartmoor is a beautiful place! I would visit there often if I lived near it. The ancient sites would be of huge interest to me as would just soaking in the scenery. I would even take a scope there to observe.

Are you allowed to fish the streams?

As some of the land technically belongs to Prince Charles, I guess a permit would be required in any case. I have never seen anyone fishing there and the streams that I know of and crossed are on the northern-edge near the Skeigh/Sticklepath and Okehampton areas. The attached web-link shows the map of other streams/rivers as:- https://www.bing.com/search?form=BGGCDF ... rtmoor+map

It certainly is a fairly dark-area away from the exterior towns and villages at night, but an ordinary camera to capture the many sites and Tors/hills is a good idea. There are also some boggy areas to be avoided at all costs !! Some of the Tors/hills at around 1,000-feet high will certainly give all-round horizon-views for both Solar and night-time views, as well as apparently some of the car-parks are used now..

https://gostargazing.co.uk/dark-sky-sites-across-uk/ - shows some of the recommended Dark Sky sites there, but best to be nearer the north of the Dartmoor National Park.

https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo/tors- ... -park.html - shows some of the sights and view-points.

As with many parts of S.W.England, Dartmoor and the surrounding areas is certainly one of my favourite places to stay, albeit it is now not easy to go anywhere at present - safely...

Ha Ha  to Mark's reply and certainly it would be well nice to meet and greet-up for that tour of the wilderness of Dartmoor, but definitely not me on horse-back again. I've learnt my lesson there... :bow

As it happens Mark's location and his fab boat, is not actually that far away to the north, but would be great if even I was also able to get to meet Mark and the boat, but unlike a previous experience on a river-cruiser in Essex - I will not be using the pole to push-off his boat from the canal-side, as Mark already knows of another scenario of me getting rather wet, but safely away from the prop and laughing it off after !!

Cheers

Hey, the idea of big fluffy rabbits is pretty cool though. I guess them Dartmoor hares get really big huh?! ;-) Years back I used to hunt rabbits.

And Terry, You've been to Dartmoor numerous times and have mentioned ancient sites. That would be my primary interest there!!

James

Thanks for that James and yes, my Chief Flying Instructor (dcsd) was one of the first U.K. pilots to photograph ancient-sites that could be seen from the air at certain crop-times annually and I not only took control whilst he would pop his camera out of the DV (DiRECT VISI0N) window to snap away.

The two of us would very often run presentations to various groups of his photographic-images, with much interest from around the East of England.

I learnt much about this type of ancient-site finding and photographing such and from horse-back too advantage of a little high photography of some of the ancient-sites on Dartmoor.

My serious riding-accident actually occurred whilst trying to photograph one particular "ring of stones" site, but the Arab type nag spooked and at around 30MPH, whilst I'm still holding the camera, threw me off onto the Granite rocks - Oooooccchhhhh big-time...!!! :o

Slight damage to the camera, but ambulance/helicopter rescue for me. :beanie:
Some walkers even took my camera and photographed me (horizontally-opposed) on the ground, whilst awaiting assistance... :D
The rest is history which cost me a loss of my aviation-engineering job due to incapacity and many thousand of £££££££'sss... :(

Terry :bow
