A Bit Of Collaborative Outreach...

Post by marktownley »

Last week managed a nice bit of outreach here at the school I work at: We enlisted the help of fellow CBSAP member 'Ibbo' - Steve Ibbotson with his mobile planetarium to come and help us with one of our 'enrichment days'. Normally it is difficult to 'publicise' these things that happen in schools in UK (not like as happens with US and Stephen) - basically if pictures etc are taken and are not shared formally in the 'public domain' then legally i cannot share them, however if the school 'chooses' to share them publicly then obviously i can share them... Fortunately this was shared publicly so I can share with you!

My pal Steve (who Walter has met) organised a science day for the year group he is in charge of - they made rockets, model helicopters, worked out the best angle of dangle for trajectories of flight. CBSAP member 'Ibbo' (another Steve just to make it confusing!) came along with the mobile planetarium and worked like a trooper with class after class coming in and out of the planetarium dome all day to teach them about Greek mythology, why Mars appears red and the life cycle of our Sun. All students received a pair of CBSAP solar glasses.

We did plan to do some solar observing too, with ibbo bringing his PST, we had the work PST and my scopes too, but, as you might expect, it poured down with rain all day!

You can see some pictures and a bit of a write up on page 4 of our weekly newsletter here http://issuu.com/hollyhallacademy/docs/ ... 53/7884657

All good fun and more to come!

mark :)
