Visit to London in September!
I have been invited to an event in London in September so I have decided to make it a week long extravaganza!
Ill be staying at the Sherlock Holmes hotel on Baker Street from Sept 14th through the 21st. Pedro Re, Gary Palmer, Alan Traino, Simon Bennett, Michael Hattey and Mark Townley are all going to visit with me at some point during the week and we are going to do our best to spread solar astronomy around London and Coventry! In an effort to spread goodwill from CBSAP headquarters to our UK chapter, I will be awarding a (pre-Meade) original Doublestacked 90mm Coronado Hydrogen Alpha telescope with Isle of Man etalons, Feathertouch focuser upgrade, a BF30 and BF15 blocking filter to one of my favorite astronomy groups in the world-Astronomy For Fun-through their member Mark Townley. This is one of a very small number of these scopes still in existence and retailed for over $14,000(US) originally.
I will also be refreshing everyone's supplies of solar glasses and doing 2 lectures/outreach appearances over there with the Baker Street Irregulars and AFF!
Monday-arrive at 7:35AM and head for hotel to get settled in- no other plans yet.
Tuesday-tour of London with Starlight Xpress owner Michael Hattey followed by dinner somewhere with as of yet, unnamed guests
Wednesday-free day so far and dinner plans already
Thursday-Possible outreach event at the Royal Observatory with Gary Palmer and possible Baker Steet irregulars meeting at night.
Friday-Possible outreach event at the Royal Observatory with Gary Palmer and possible Baker Steet irregulars meeting at night.
Saturday-Lunt Fort at Coventry event and lecture with Astronomy for Fun!
Sunday-leave for Atlanta
I won't have any transportation so I will not be able to visit any other cities while I am there. If anyone would like to arrange something during the week please let me know. I want to spread goodwill and cheer to all you old stuffy Brits and leave a mark on the city before I leave...lol

Re: Visit to London in September!
I am so excited I can't stand it!
Just got an email from Simon Bennett in London and there will be a lecture and get together of the Baker Street Irregulars astro-club as well on Thursday night with Pete Lawrence, BBS Sky at Night magazine and TV, and my friends Pedro Re and Alan Traino will be flying in to spend the week with me as well.
We also get to finally meet Alexandra and "The Hubby" at the prime meridian outside the royal observatory... I hope they both like big ole' Southern hugs from big ole American bears.
So, its really shaping up and I can't wait to get there. I had to use all of my sky miles for the ticket and Lunt paid for the hotel so it ended up being fairly economical. Now if the dollar would just go up in value a bit, I can afford to eat. No nonprofit funds are ever used for travel, by the way. just so you know.

Re: Visit to London in September!
Stephen,
Only realised now that you will be in London.
Would have flown over if I had realised.
Would have been great to meet up with everyone.
Too short notice now unfortunately.
(I will be in London and Birmingham attending BAA events on 20th and 27th Sept respectively, but alas not this weekend)
Hope you enjoy your time in the UK and best of luck with the weather.
The last couple of weeks have been quite good, so long may it last.
Michael.

Stephen, I haven't checked into Solarchat for a long time and just discovered you'll be in London next week. I live practically just down the street from Simon's store so I do hope to meet you while you are here. Douglas

Looking forward to it. I just changed my seats to the left side of the aircraft so I might see some aurora on the overnight flight!
I did blast this all over social media and this site so sorry if some of you got late notice...

If people from this forum are intending to come along to the Lunt Roman Fort event on the saturday can you shout up here so we can 'put you on the guest list' so you get in as space is limited to 100 people.
I know Stu and his wife are coming along - anyone else? Mike?

Re: Visit to London in September!
I met with Stephen Ramsden, a true hero of the Solar world (if not of the entire Solar System!) for the first time last night. I caught up with him at dinner with Simon Bennett and Elena Kostiaeva of the Widescreen Centre, the top astronomy store in central London, who are hosting him for part of his stay in England. Dinner was at a Lebanese restaurant near Simon's store on Baker Street. I was truly honoured to meet Stephen and we had a great time talking about astronomy, science, schools, air traffic control, submarines and politics. Any one who ever has the chance to meet with Stephen should jump at the chance. What an interesting guy and such a generous and giving human being. I attach a photo I took of Stephen (perhaps suffering from some jet lag) and Simon and Elena. Hope the rest of the trip to the UK goes well!
