My first outreach in town
My first outreach in town
So it seems that I will do a solar observation event during the annual festival of my town, that's the first time I do this open for public. It will be in a special event dedicated to technology and engineering. This means mainly old cars, motorcycles and tractors, food products and similar, as this is more an agricolture and small industry region, rather than high-tech. This is the website of the event: http://www.arivalamachina.com/index.htm (unfortunately there is no notice about solar observation because I jumped in lately)
Anyway I will bring my Lunt 60mm H alpha scope. Maybe a white light set up, but I have only the astrosolar Baader film for that, no wedge, so this would need care. I have also the Quark, but I don't think it's good for this, the image is not nice as in the Lunt.
Then I will have the pc with the pics, some books (a nice "Beyond" from Michael Benson with large pictures) and I want also to do some poster
I have some doubts about kids: I would not let too small kids, say less that 4 yrs, to look at the Sun in the scope. I have some experience with my son, and I feel that at that early age they may not understand well the danger, and then think that they can look at the Sun with any scope. Parents instead are willing to let them do the experience, even if they are so small.
I am quite excited for this, let's hope in good weather!
Any idea or suggestion for me is greatly appreciated

Sounds absolutely fantastic! I really hope you get good weather for the day
Do you have a home made spectroscope? these can be excellent for demonstrating the suns spectral lines and where H alpha is when it is a cloudy moment.

I limit the ages to 8 years and up mainly because younger kids don't have the ability to close one eye and look through the other yet.
i would just let the Sun speak for you and not worry about getting too fancy. You don't have to "push" this on anyone because as soon as a few people come up and look, everyone else wants to see what the fuss is about.
There are posters and business cards to download at www.charliebates.org and you can always just use someone's image from here to make your own.
Everything on this forum is freely shared for educational purposes. We don't allow egos so you won't notice copyrights or any other objections to freely sharing the Sun here.
Good luck and I know that you will love it as I believe that sharing the beauty of the Sun is the key to understanding it and improving your own skills, not to mention the positive affect it has on the community.

Thanks Stephen and Alexandra for your support and suggestions and thanks for sharing that nice stuff
By the way, the call with the organizer was quite funny: after speaking for several minutes about how to do it and so on, at the end he asked me whether it will be possible to look in the telescope!
Yes sure I replied.. and then he told me that his wife was so curious that wanted to be the first one to look!

Some pics from the event: my corner, the weather was cloudy, we had just few hours of clear sky, but many people interested anyway. Organizers were very happy too, and we have appointment for repeating it next year.
Then the Faucault pendulum, very big but it did not work well unfortunately
A beautiful pendulum clock for towers, with two axis, one for the clock and one for the bells, dated 1920.
