HOW TO REPORT AN EVENT TO NASA NIGHT SKY NETWORK N A HURRY

Post by solarchat »

Membership in our outreach club requires the reporting of at least three events per year (hopefully more) to NASA Night Sky Network at http://nightsky.jpl.nasa.gov/login.cfm

This is a somewhat needlessly complicated process but it is very important to the club's credibility. We have been #1 in the world for several months as far as people reached and are currently in the top 5. This means that we are beating out every other club in America as far as solar outreach numbers go. I think that this is awesome as we are redefining what astronomy outreach means and doing it without any of the standard political BS and self absorbed drama involved in the normal astronomy club here.

International members do not have to do this but I would appreciate it if you would. Domestic members must complete this all the way, not just the initial entry but the actual reporting of the events numbers after the date of the event.

Here is an easy tutorial..

Step One-log onto NASA night sky network

Step Two-choose "add/log event" from the drop down menu

Step Three- first page of reporting form minimum info

Name of Event, Date of Event, select no physical location, select scheduled, click "next tab"

Step Four-member organizing the event is all you need on the next page, then select "next tab"

Step Five- just skip this page select "next tab"

Step Six-the actual event log

Choose your name in the first box
choose "Star Party..." in the event type box
type length of event
CHOOSE "OTHER NSN RESOURCES" AND "SUN" IN THE TOOLKIT/TOPICS COVERED SECTION!
Just estimate the number of people attending. anything is fine as long as its close
CLICK THE APPROVED BOX!!! AND "SUBMIT ALL CHANGES"
if you don't see the approved box, that means you are not listed as a coordinator, please email me and I will change that.

Please go and log your events.

Thanks Stephen
I guess this is the same procedure for international posters ?
Will it accept an Australian location ?
Will it accept my deviantArt page address for pictures ?

HEEEELLLLPPPPPP! Ok I am totally confused by this process. FIRST! Can we make this a YELLOW STICKY at the top of this page???? I have a real hard time finding these directions every time I try and schedule an event. It really sucks. There is no way I could do this without these directions.

SECOND! Could you post a similar direction for what to do after an event is complete? Is the event automatically logged or after the event is there something else I must do? Please post directions.

If I am lost - others may have totally given up using this confusing process.

Joe, I'll do it for you.

EDIT: You already did it. I gather it was no biggie after all.

the site makes it very difficult to report events, I know.

I do appreciate you guys getting it in there though as it is the only legit NASA validated source for our outreach groups performance.

and Jim/Joe I made it a sticky. there are also several tutorial videos for logging events on NSN. Funny, if it is so difficult to log events that you need to create tutorial videos.....uh, you should probably just make it easier.

I sent an email last year to the director asking them if they could possibly make the logging simpler as it was keeping a lot of people from logging the events. They said no.

you can report as many as you want. Make sure to select "approved" on the bottom of the first page.

Let's KEEP CBSAP the #1 Outreach Club on the planet by reporting your outreach events. If I can do it, anyone can. Just follow the step by step instructions carefully. There are pages and fields that do not need to be filled in. You can just skip over those and hit NEXT TAB! Make yourself a little cheat sheet of steps and it becomes easier and easier each time. Make it a New Year's resolution to log your events. Hey, it;s got to be easier than losing weight! :P :thanx:
