Book Recommendation- 15 Million Degrees

Post by Carbon60 »

Anyone who's looking for an easy, yet informative, introduction to the workings of the Sun might want to take a look at this book by Professor Lucie Green.

The content covers the basics from the nature of light, through to how the Sun is powered by nuclear reactions at its core, the structure and dynamics of the various layers from core to corona, the formation and nature of sunspots, flares, CMEs, and the impact the Sun has on space weather and the Earth/Sun environment. All of this is presented in a chatty style that engages with the reader from the start. No maths, just excellent descriptive prose, peppered with historical observations and research that sets our modern knowledge of the Sun into context.

Great bedtime reading.

Stu.

Lucie Green's book (2016) complements and in places updates Jack Zirker's book Journey from the center of the sun (2002). Both really good reads.

Thanks for the recommendation, Stu.

For that price, can't really argue. Will pick up a copy (as in a physical copy, I just can't do e-reading :) ).

Had a start at reading it last night, got through the first chapter without even realising it, very easy light hearted read.

Glad you’re enjoying the book, Mark. As you say it is an easy read, yet there’s good solid information that provides a great overview of the workings of the Sun.

Thanks for the info :bow . I have a copy of the Penguin book being delivered tomorrow.

There are also Royal Institution lectures:

15 Million Degrees: A Journey to the Centre of the Sun - with Lucie Green

Q&A - A Journey to the Centre of the Sun - with Lucie Green

Simon

PS Penguin book has now arrived and it is a very good read, right from the beginning.

For those that don't have the book, the talk by Professor Lucie Green is very well (dynamically) illustrated and generously presented to RI and on other occasions too. The best is, of course, to access both.
