Weekend Geomagnetic Storm UPDATED 7th & 9th Oct. 18

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi,

Fast flowing solar wind from a large canyon shaped coronal hole, with embedded southerly directed magnetic fields, washed over our planet over the weekend creating a G1 storm and beautiful aurora. Here are my magnetometer data captured throughout the event. The storm left our magnetic field ringing like a bell for several hours before returning to relative calm.

Thanks for looking.

Good catch Stu, I saw some nice images taken from Anglesey of the resulting aurora.

Hi Stu.

Saw the SDO image of the large coronal hole on Spaceweather a couple of days ago and was anticipating your report.
Sure enough .... !

Cheers.
Peter

Many thanks, Mark/Peter.

Here's an updated one with added data from the DSCOVR satellite which illustrates the corresponding Bz magnetic variations within the solar wind (red line). As this turns south, there's a corresponding increase in geomagnetic activity.
