How to build a magnetometer- Tutorial
Hi all,
I was asked to produce a write up on how to build a magnetometer, so I've pulled some notes together which I hope will be of some interest.
The attachment explains it all, but basically the device is very sensitive and it enables even very small (sub nT) fluctuations in Earth’s magnetic field to be logged and plotted. CME impacts are particularly impressive and this device records every detail as the magnetic environment is impacted, compressed and distorted. Given its simplicity, it is remarkably good at reproducing magnetograms recorded by the professionals. Ideal for when the clouds roll in.....
Stephen/Ken, I'd be grateful if this could be transferred to the tutorial section.
Thanks.
Stu.

Re: How to build a magnetometer- Tutorial
Hi Peter,
I see it as 'paying it forward'. I've learned such a lot from this wonderful forum about solar imaging and solar telescope mods that I want to share anything relevant that I have created/developed myself with anyone on this site who might be interested.
I know others on this forum do the same and it's a fantastic way to build collective knowledge.
Cheers
Stu.

Re: How to build a magnetometer- Tutorial
This is excellent stuff Stu, something I would really like to have a go at myself one day, alas, where I live in the dire and grime of the centre of downtown Brierley Hills I suspect my local environment may be a little too electromagnetically noisy...

Re: How to build a magnetometer- Tutorial
Does any one know if Speake Sensors are still in business?
I have tried the link in the article and searched online. Plenty of links found in the search but they do not connect .

I've dropped them an email and we'll see if they respond. Their number still goes through to their offices, albeit to an answering machine. Maybe they are on lunch......
I'll let you know if I hear back.
Thanks for your interest.

Re: How to build a magnetometer- Tutorial
Thanks Stu and swisswalter.
I have just tried Speake Sensors again and they are back online.
May have been off for maintenance or suchlike over the weekend.
I am now psyching myself up to make one.
The mechanical and electrical parts seem easy enough to make.
The part that will tax the old grey matter is the computing side.
I will get sorted in the end.
Excellent article Cheers. .
