Unsettled Geomagnetics

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi All,

On the evening of May 7th, Earth was struck by a weak, but geo-effective, shock wave of unknown origin, according to SpaceWeather.com and the effects are still being felt. The impact sparked aurora over high latitudes and also perturbed my magnetometers here in the north-west of England.

Things have been pretty quiet as of late, so although not as impressive as a significant CME impact, it makes for interesting data, especially given the mystery of its origin.

Hi Stuart

very interesting, Are you sure it wasn't the neighbour with the hoover ;)

Only stardust in the wind, some fine and some less fine scopes, filters and adapters as well. Switzerland 47 N, 9 E, in the heart of EUROPE :)

Thanks Alexandra, Walter, Derek.

Thankfully, Walter, my data correlate with those from other magnetometers in Europe, so unless the hoover is really, really powerful, I think we are safe to assume it is not that.

Cheers

Hi Carbon60, can you show us some samples of quiet days?
That can help me to know the difference between active and quiet days.
Thanks!

Hi Wah,

Sorry for the delay. This now is a reasonably quiet period, so here is a quiet 'control' data sample that you asked for. The Sun is not totally quiescent at the moment, but the chart gives a good indication of what geomagnetic 'quiet' looks like. You can see, the daily fluctuations peak at around 6:00am and dip to a minimum just after 12:00 as Earth rotates 'under the sun'.

Hope this helps.
