06Jun2014 PZ's SHG Images: CaK (dispersion boost)

Post by p_zetner »

Greetings Everyone.

I replaced my 2400 /mm grating with a 3600 /mm. I was a little surprised to see how large the improvement in dispersion was! The downside: a trade-off in intensity. Despite being coated for UV, operation with the 3600 /mm grating required a lot more gain to work in the CaK portion of the spectrum.

A happy observation was the clear delineation between the K2 and K3 portions of the K line. Here's a sample spectrum:

Here are images made in the K1r, K2r and K3 lines:

The K3 image shows less contrasty sunspots and more apparent (if you look hard!) filaments since it images higher up in the chromosphere. If you're having trouble seeing a difference between K2 and K3, I produced a difference image (K3 minus K2r). I thought the filaments would stand out in this difference image, but that didn't happen. The active regions look quite different in the two lines, though.

Cheers.
Peter.

EDIT: The photos have gone through one revision since the initial posting. I think these are a noticeable improvement. Processing is everything!

Thanks, Wah!

Your images are outstanding. Maybe a higher resolution grating would increase the possibilities?

Cheers.
Peter.

An inexpensive + suitable size grating is not easy to find, can you tell me where to get one?
