I started on my SHG based on a spectroscope I had built
im using 60 X 1000 objective as main lens
2400 lines per mm grating
2 50 mm lens for collimation at f/4

I created a "window" to see when sun is on slit

spectroscope works well when no scope is attached
here is shot with just spectroscope it self

Hi John

wonderful mod, that looks great. Sorry I can't help at all

John,
Focusing the solar image on the slit gap will be a bit of trial and error....
The Ha (and all the other "absorption" lines) will remain dark (by contrast to the surrounding continuum). It's only when the slit scans over a "brighter" feature (in the Ha) that parts the line will show some detail. e.g. Active areas/ proms.
How you do set your slit gap? How do you know the slit gap is parallel to the grating?
A spectroscope with 50mm lens will give a reduced dispersion and resolution - to get down to the 0.5A range you may have to rethink and go for longer fl lenses.
Give it a go and drift scan across the solar surface......

Hello

As a first shot, I would recomend Cak line : they show a lot of bright area Vs Ha.

What people recommend me (and it works!) is :

1- focus the collimator lens using a digital camera with infinity focus
2- focus camera lens in order to get clear spectra
3- focus telescope lens in order to get clear sun edge....and be able to see clear/dark areas on the absorbtion lines
