Thanks everyone.
Wah:
Here's the original (sized). The final image had some PS scale and skew transformations applied to circularize the disk. I'm looking forward to see what you do with it.
............... Well, I guess not!!
Despite Stephen's assurance that the site accepts any size file, I get the following message when I try to upload: "The file is too big, maximum allowed size is 3 MiB."
The original (sized) image file size is 5.7MB.
Cheers.
Peter.

Is it a TIFF? I can only get JPEGs to load here without fuss and certainly any size as long as the pixels aren't more than 2000 wide.

Thanks, Alexandra.
I was trying to load a tiff (16 bit, grayscale) .... oops!
Here's the RGB 8-bit jpeg (original spectroheliogram, sized to circular disk (roughly), before orientation correction (horizontal flip)).
Cheers.
Peter.

Walter!
I thought it was dirt on the slit, but I may have been pointing the scope in the wrong direction!

Re: 03Jul2014 PZ SHG: 1st installment: H Beta
Thanks for trying, Wah.
I do have a bit of an issue with slit orientation - it varies with wavelength, indicating the grating mount rotation axis is not perfect. I can adjust slit rotation during an observing session, but I've become lazy and assumed I can filter out the problem in post-processing! This might be causing the difficulty in removing the bands (although, I generally use a 1px or 2px slice of the spectrum to construct the spectroheliogram).
Here is an example of the video filtering I use (in Virtual Dub).
I suppose I should be more careful with this!!
Cheers.
