15Jul2014 PZ SHG: H alpha and He D3

Post by p_zetner »

Hello Everyone.

Managed to make a few spectroheliograms on July 15. Here is an image in H alpha (presented as inverted disk with proms) in comparison with a He D3 (5875.6 A) image.

Cheers.
Peter.

really nice!

Apparently you succeed to remove the lines on your pictures!

For the He picture, how do you get it? Are you calibrating the SHG on this emission line when you're on the edge of the sun? Later one, any special treatment?

Thanks for your comments, everyone, and thanks for looking!

Vincent:

I'm basically following Wah's technique for line removal, sometimes with more success than other times! Occasionally, I will use the ImageJ fft bandpass filter (with horizontal lines suppression) as an additional processing step.

The He disk is difficult. You can see this spectral region become bright at the limb so you can zoom in on the D3 line fairly easily. My technique is to make a series of SHG images at different wavelengths near D3. To see the absorbing plage regions, I subtract, from this series, an image made from the continuum nearby and process the result. It's a bit of trial and error to find the best continuum image to subtract. Also, I think the professionals divide out the continuum, rather than subtract, but I've had no success doing this. With my instrument and processing, I usually have a series of about 5 images which show the He D3 features (a wavelength span of about 0.3 Angstroms). I choose the best one to "tweak".

Cheers.
Peter.

Glad to see the bands are removed nearly perfectly!
