Geomagnetic response to coronal hole driven solar wind

Post by Carbon60 »

Hi all,

A few days ago a pair of coronal holes helped fast moving protons and electrons escape from the solar atmosphere to produce a fast flowing (>550km/sec) solar wind. This has now reached Earth and the effects can be seen as bright Aurora at high latitudes. The solar wind is also creating strong circulating currents in the magnetosphere which are significant enough to produce a strong signal on my magnetometers, as shown in the chart. The geomagnetic effects are now subsiding as we move through and out of the wind stream.
