Hi all,
Earth was struck by a minor CME last night resulting in a G1 Geomagnetic storm (Planetary K-index (Kp5)) creating beautiful aurora. The geomagnetic environment has calmed down for the time being, but might increase again over the next 24hrs as Earth passes through the plasma wake.
Thanks for looking.
Stu

Great presentation Stu - that kit is really working well. Just downloaded your pdf on how you built it - very tempting!

Thanks everyone for your continued support.
Mike, why not give it a go? All I will say is that temperature stability is as important as having a magnetically quite location to place the sensor. The heterodyne circuitry seems to be temperature sensitive, giving rise to a degree of frequency drift between daytime and night-time temperatures. Since producing the tutorial document, I've modified the housing for the 'bat detector' and I now have it located within a vacuum flask which itself is inside a picnic cool box to try to minimise and smooth out ambient temperature excursions. This seems to work quite well most of the time. I need to take some photos of the set-up and post them in the tutorial.
If you do give it a go, let me know and I'll send you a copy of the Excel spreadsheet which I use to filter some noise and plot the charts.
Cheers and Merry Christmas to everyone.

Re: G1 Geomagnetic Storm
Thanks Stu
I'm going to order the Bat5 anyway as a dual purpose toy and I'll have a look for the other components after Xmas
It's been a while since I got my soldering iron hot so I feel the urge for an electronics project
Pity I didn't think about this when I had a 1m deep hole dug out for my pier but I'm sure I can find another spot
