Minor geomagnetic weekend storm

Post by Carbon60 »

This weekend brought a minor solar storm (Kp5) as fast flowing solar wind from a coronal hole finally reached Earth yesterday. Other than that, magnetometers are pretty quiet.

Hi Stuart

another fine report

Only stardust in the wind, some fine and some less fine scopes, filters and adapters as well. Switzerland 47 N, 9 E, in the heart of EUROPE :)

Many thanks everyone.

On a really quiet day the graph would be smoother and closer to 'zero' except that we don't get absolutely quiet days because of the influence of the Sun on our ionosphere and its constant solar wind. These create minor fluctuations in the signal daily. Here in this chart you are seeing the effect of stronger and more 'gusty' solar wind from a coronal hole, which imprinted itself on our magnetic field as it blew by. My magnetometer detected these perturbations in my local geomagnetic field throughout the day, as shown. The more positive or negative the signal is, the greater the effect.

Hope this helps.

Stu.
