SHG 1st light of 2016: AR12529 in H alpha
Greetings Everyone.
Back in the solar imaging game as of 13Apr. No blizzards or ice storms, just clear sky with sunshine that felt almost warm.
In addition to imaging with H alpha and Ca K scopes (http://solarchat.natca.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=19365), I brought the spectroheliograph out for some fun.
Since the Big Spot has made for some amazing images on this forum, I thought I'd present an animation of the spot as a spectral sweep (blue to red) through the H alpha line.

I'm adding a similar spectral series for the proms on the SW limb. Won't post an animation as I need to use a different computer (with Photoshop) to save the gif properly in continuous looping mode. I think that's the problem, anyway.
An interesting observation about this spectral series is that it's "lopsided". The proms are much more prevalent on the blue side of H alpha line centre, indicating that the prom plasma we are seeing has a predominant line of sight velocity approaching us. The filament has roughly the same visibility on both sides of line centre indicating that it's quiescent.

It's my usual instrument but I've added a x2 photographic tele-extender (Komura Telemore) in combination with a 300mmfl telephoto for the camera lens to give more magnification in the image. The configuration here is then: 600mmfl camera lens, 500mmfl collimator lens and 1000mmfl telescope objective (Astro Rubinar catadioptric). This gives a system focal length of 1200mmfl but, with a 25micron slit, it also projects a slit image of 30 microns width (7px) on the camera sensor. I should really go to a smaller slit width for this configuration and plan to use 10 microns next time.
Ultimately, I would like to go to a longer focal length telescope ... the ideal way to magnify the image scale. I've tried the x2 tele-extender on the Astro-Rubinar for 2000mmf but the image was definitely too soft.
It looks like your new SHG will allow some "mix and match" of various camera lenses. I think this will give you some great flexibility to achieve a desired result.

well, first trial failed....
I think that it come from using a zoom lens as a collimation : I could achieve to get a proper focus.
Middle of the sun was ok, edge a disaster...
Are you placing an ERF in front of you catadioptric?

I agree that you might have trouble with a zoom lens. They are generally of lower optical quality than fixed focal length lenses. You can probably put together a good selection of fixed focal length lenses relatively cheaply by watching eBay.
