old but a great book if you like SHG images
fig 89 on page 144 shows He image at 10830 line
I have IR grating blazed at 10000
how hard will it be to ID line ?
how hard would it be to capture image?
any special processing steps?
have any of you SHG super stars out there tried to do this?

Not a good choice for small instruments. Several things conspire to ruin your efforts, first the diffraction blur for a given system is twice what it is in the visible. Second, refractive optics (unless designed for this wavelength range) are well outside their optimum design parameters. They will perform poorly, and add to the already poorer diffraction limited performance. The Kitt Peak magnetograph at the vacuum tower telescope (both RIP, sadly) had a resolution three times poorer at 10830 than at 6563. Third, ccd detectors are at the edge of usefulness at this wavelength, making signal to noise and integration time an issue. As for finding the line, here's a section of the spectrum around it, with the 10830 He line at the arrow:

Possibly worth trying, but I consider the 8542 CaII line the farthest end of the red frontier.

Observing the Sun with complex optical systems since 1966, and still haven't burned, melted or damaged anything.
