below is image from Youngs book (also page 61 in Ken's "Imaging...")
let me know if following is true
1) I assume he has slit on a prom at edge of sun
2) part of prom is in one direction and then in other due to doppler
3) its the image of prom itself and not the Hbeta line being distorted
4) did he do an open slit to see this effect or just place narrow slit on prom
5) has anyone here seen this effect for themselves?

These were distortions seen in the Spectral line. A fine slit positioned over an active area.
