Geomagnetic Unrest Jan 2020

Post by Carbon60 »

The past few days saw an outbreak of beautiful aurora around the poles although there was no significant solar activity to be seen. What did occur was the interplanetary solar wind, which carries with it a magnetic filed, flipped south sporadically and this allowed the solar wind to penetrate deeper than usual into our magnetic shield, exciting oxygen and nitrogen in our upper atmosphere. The geomagnetic effects were easily detected on my magnetometer here in the UK, as shown below.

I've also summarised the geomagnetic activity over the past month since Dec 8th. Coupled with an uptick in cycle 25 activity, 2020 seems to be off to a good start.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Hi Stuart...

Great review of the events and I've been following the reports on SpaceWeather where your observations have been posted as well.

Always great to see your data as so few have your type of setup to monitor this activity.

Great data Stuart! I saw on Spaceweather about this flipping, glad you saw it too on your monitors :bow we need some clear skies and some auroras to come south. :hamster:
