Geoeffective Shockwave

A solar filament eruption on Jan 8th created a shockwave in the interplanetary magnetic field which arrived at Earth earlier today. The shockwave was geoeffective, creating ripples on my magnetometer and at the time of writing these were growing in intensity into the night, so look out for aurora if you're in a good place to see them under clear skies.

Old news, I read this first on Spaceweather

Only joking! well done and congrats on Spaceweather, you are becoming a regular reporter there :bow

That is a quite a slow rise in activity, not like your usual plots of a sudden hit.

Many thanks, Alexandra and Jochen.

As you say, Alexandra, this was quite a slow build-up compared with some other plots.

Cheers

Great stuff Stu, and yes congrats on spaceweather too.

I have to say I think the use of the 2 red lines in the graphic is a simple but powerful visualisation tool.

Many thanks, Mark :)

Here's an updated version showing the full event. All quiet again, so no chance of any further bright aurora tonight.

I saw some nice aurora pics on the BBC today.

Do you have any north facing coast close to you Stu? (not that you could go there atm  )

Hi Mark,

Fleetwood beach is probably the best option with a nice north view (over Morecambe Bay and the Lake District). One day.... :)
