Perseid meteor shower 2021
Hi,
Allegedly the peak of the Perseid shower was for my local time at about 07:hours e.g. 12:00 UTC but looking at the graph nothing exceptional.
My friend got 82 hits at 12:00 UTC and I gotless. His stations is reporting more meteors since a few days compared to mine. Looks like the RFI went down in downtown.
Below screenshot of 3 stations I monitor and nothing out of the world IMHO

Re: Perseid meteor shower 2021
Had the "Echoes" meteor detection programme running since the start of August, but have not stopped it to look at the results so far. Been having a sneak peek at the screen waterfall every time I pass the room and have certainly been seeing some interesting activity. Clocked several visually last night while out looking at the latest RS Oph recurrent nova outburst.
Will pull the plug on the programme poss around the 17-18th and post results for comparison with everyone as soon as poss.
Regards to all,
Les

Hi,
I just saw this news on the IMO International Meteor Organization and it covers more or less the poor Perseids of this year and my observations of today morning about more echoes.

Sounds about right for this year Rainer.
Once I've completed the captured AVI's here, will attempt a count albeit most that I saw on the screen were very short-lived and not too exciting.
Cheers

Great data Rainer, it will be good to see all the data from others when it comes in too
I only saw 2 last night in 30 minutes around 3am, but then I was restricted to only seeing through a gap in the north

Re: Perseid meteor shower 2021
Hi,
Looks like Friday 13th was a better day as usual.
Looking at the graphs except the one from Belgium the harvest was 25% higher the yesterday morning and a bit earlier ...
It would be a lot better for comparison reasons to plot this graphs in Local Time and not UTC as it is proven that every where in the world the best hours are in the morning e.g. dawn Doing that the graphs would be better comparable. I understand UTC is the Holy Grail for Astroomy but in this case I dare to say no

Hi,
The more days after prediction things are getting better. Morning of today August 14th.
Look at the 3 stations. 2 in Mexico and 1 in USA. Nice synchrony ...

Re: Perseid meteor shower 2021
A bit late to the party... I've been away for a few days with my wife celebrating 36 years of marriage in our honeymoon hotel. Back home now I've finally been able to catch up with my radio meteor data. As Rainer says, the peak was not on the 12th. Today (14th) has produced the best results so far.
It will be interesting to see how things develop.

Re: Perseid meteor shower 2021
Thank you Stu for the latest update.
Unfortunately the weather on Friday/13th evening-night was cloud-covered, so no All-Sky-Imaging available.
So missed that high-point of the shower and much the same for Saturday evening too.
Thanks also to Rainer for the verifications that the 12-13th (my last Oculus captures) was not as good as the next night and probably this Saturday-Sunday/14-15th, but as said the clouds are interfering here again(as usual)...

Re: Perseid meteor shower 2021
I thought it might be interesting to compare my perseid data (2021) with data I collected over the same period in 2020.
Both years appear pretty similar except for an uptick on the 14th this year and maybe generally more detections this year. The hourly rate of 60-70 compares favourably with observational counts posted by the International Meteor Organisation (IMO) (ZHR corrected data) https://www.imo.net/members/imo_live_sh ... &year=2021, although I would expect radio detection rates to be higher because of the nature of the observational methods.
With the exception of the spike on the 14th, both radio and observational counts are below expectations for the Perseids, which generally are expected to max out at around 120-140 counts per hour on a good year. It is interesting to see that the spike on the 14th does actually correlate with this figure. I guess this comes from the heterogeneity of the debris field.

Re: Perseid meteor shower 2021
Thanks Stu and yes these confirm the downturn of both two years. Perhaps so many of these meteors have already been swallowed-up in the previous years, that the downturn could signify a permanent loss of those high numbers of years ago... ??

Terrific data Stuart and congratulations on the 36 years a nice little peak to celebrate, did you happen to see any? That would have been very romantic I tried but was clouded out unfortunately.

Re: Perseid meteor shower 2021
Hi Stuart,
Last night I reviewed the 8-hours total of footage of both 12-13th and 14-15th and there were certainly only around 20 definite "very short-lived" captures and two fireball types. Most were of the 14-15th, where some thin-cloud started to interfere around 03:30z and in any case dawn would soon follow.
Although local light-pollution at times might have prevented more definite Perseid captures, overflying aircraft and satellites as well as stars and planets were easily captured throughout, which suggests that not many (if any) were missed from S.E.England...
I hope to extract many of those in due course as still-images. All times are available and accurate to within about 1-second of GMT...

The first link talks about the outburst at 6-9am on the 14th, exactly what Stuart picked up the second link I couldn't make head nor tail of their graphs, they seem to have a peak on the 13th possibly?

Hi Alexandra,
The blip seems to have the meteor community quite excited. Not sure why the Japanese data suggest things happened on the 13th. I can only think that someone messed up when they converted to universal time.

Re: Perseid meteor shower 2021
Yes, Japan is +9 hours ahead of UTC = UK ...
Again I say, using Local Time for this phenomena which happen in all countries of the world early in the morning local time graphs would be much better ...
BTW. Meteor news uses local time predictions. Look at the fifth column labeled " Local Summer Time " but I guess we need to make it confusing so people have something to do

Hi all,
Pulled the plug on the "Echoes" recording system on the 16th, so results ..... of a kind.... from 1st to 15th Aug. My "heatmap" is self colour coded with the legend on the right. For some reason, probably me setting something wrong in the programme, I got heatmaps generated every four days of operation so when I pieced them together, they didn't make much sense so you'll have to do with my own overall map colours.

Re: Perseid meteor shower 2021
Hi,
Yes, that was some peak on the 14th. Looking at this link to Spaceweather.com, they seem to think it was a "reappearance" of a Perseid filament that knocked out a satellite back in 1993 https://spaceweather.com/archive.php?vi ... &year=2021
The "normal" Perseid max on the 13th appears around 02-03am for me, and another similar spike occurred on the 2nd Aug, again around 2-3am.
Interesting times !!!!!!!
