Geomagnetic Unrest 30th Sept.-2nd Oct. 2021

Post by Carbon60 »

A CME passed close by Earth leaving magnetically disturbed solar wind in its wake which we passed through on Sept 30th/October 1st. This in turn induced geomagnetic unrest in our local environment, sparking aurora around the poles. The event was relatively weak, but at this time of the year, close to the northern autumn equinox, even such mild geomagnetic events can create beautiful aurora.

The event in full is shown in my magnetometer data along with a secondary event which is in progress at the time of writing. This secondary event is as a result of southerly oriented interplanetary magnetic fields carried by the solar wind interacting with Earth's field. It isn't certain if this will stretch into the night here in Europe, so there are no guarantees of auroral activity. The activity isn't related to anything specific, such as a CME or coronal hole and it could 'dissolve' as fast as it appeared.

Good record Stu, my phone has been buzzing with alerts these past couple of days so expected to see your magnetometer twitching :)

Nice to see Stuart, I saw a nice aurora picture from Brian (Smerral) in Caithness yesterday (on Facebook), so it must have been strong enough to give a good one in Scotland :)
