Appenzellersun, merger PST-CaK/LUNT CaK
Hi Freaks
having received a PST-CaK, the weather is awful. Well just good for some labwork before the filters are tested with the sun (hopefully soon)
scan with the pure filters only
scan with PST-filter 1 and 2
PST-filter 1 and 2 means the CaK narrow part and the broader energy rejection filter behind it. The PST CaK is well centered at 393 nm wheras the LUNT is at 392 nm and so the Combos LUNT/PST CaK. The PST CaK combination is dimmer as The LUNT.
Can't wait to have them on the sun

Good luck with that, Walter.
The results will be interesting to see.

Good graphs Walter! Glad to see you having fun!
The broader erf behind the magic cak filter in the pst - was it rusted? The 2 cak psts I have seen both had rusting on this filter...

Re: Appenzellersun, merger PST-CaK/LUNT CaK
Hi Mark
thank you very much. No, I have not noticed any rusting at all. I was surprised to find out that the ERF is the limiting factor of the transmission at 393 nm.
I'm sure you noticed that it is a sandwich and very nicely blackened at the edge. BTW, your lenspanner is just a fantastic tool, thank's again.
The longer I work with this filters, the more I think we look at wrong places.
The transmission at 393 nm is so little, that we do not see it in ordinary plots, or just overlook it.

Re: Appenzellersun, merger PST-CaK/LUNT CaK
Interesting, I will have to fish out the CaK PST ERF and try it out in my stack... Not sure how much in the way of clear skies the next couple of days will offer though...
I've been spending the afternoon messing with the SM90, I have flexure in the lens cell on the scope i'm using so not able to get things on band properly at the moment. Tonight the lens cell gets a disassembling to see what is going on...

No pics from it yesterday, the haze was so bad, I was struggling with the 40mm scopes, you'll see those images in the main section.

Re: Appenzellersun, merger PST-CaK/LUNT CaK
I tried putting it back into my CaK stack this afternoon, it made no improvement to contrast, just let a little less light through, so I will probably not include it. The key with my setup is to get as much distance between the magic CaK filters as possible - they set up reflections / ghosts between each other. When they are close toegther the ghost overlays the image and is easily visible - like here http://brierleyhillsolar.blogspot.co.uk ... april.html but when the wider they are spaced apart the dimmer the ghost becomes until it is fainter than the background sky.
My CaK module is just under 20cm long, with one of the filters on the far right hand side (objective side), and the other about 1cm to the left of the chromed thumbscrew, that puts the 2 elements about 15cm apart...

finaly some details of the secret CaK setup. Thank you very much. Do I see a reducer ? I'm sure you haven't even revealed 10% of the secrets yet

Re: Appenzellersun, merger PST-CaK/LUNT CaK
I've amended the picture above for a bit more detail. One day i'll buy some 1 1/4" nosepiece extensions and make it look a bit tidier
The reducer is just the casing from it, no optics in there, it just gives me a bit more extension...

Re: Appenzellersun, merger PST-CaK/LUNT CaK
The higher you can get the filter stack up inside the OTA the more contrast too in my experience; I guess it is because you are then using more of the surface area of the filter...

Hi Mark
thank you for that additional hint. I'm needing it for tomorrow. We expect good weather and I would like to test my new "KLUPS" filter

Re: Appenzellersun, merger PST-CaK/LUNT CaK
You know you have all the ingredients for the perfect scope for caK full disks - use the gold tube and objective from your CaK pst with a SCT crayford focuser, bung in the KLUPS at the end with your CCD and 2x barlow, mount using tube rings and away you go. Will get better FD images than any of your other scopes

Hi Mark
perfect hint. I'll do it, but first I have a go with the setup I prepaired for tomorrow. Now it's time to hit the pillow.
