Lunt LS50FHA Mod posible?

Post by thedoci »

So my question this time is weather or not a PST style mod using the etelon of a LS50FHA telescope would be posible, and if it would have any benefits compared to a standard PST mod.

I am asking because i am currently thinking about buying my first H-Alpha Solar scope, and would like to buy one i can mod later. The reason i ask about the LS50 is because it has a narrower band pass then the PST. It also has more apature and comes with a independent blocking filter.

Alternativly this question would be expanded to the LS60 pressure tuned telescope as well.

If the difecultys of modding a lunt telescope outways the benefits i will get a PST as my first H-Alpha Scope.

Hi Lukas

please trust us. First go through the valley of using a PST, then throught the valley of modding it to a bigger donor scope. then we talk about modding a LUNT to a bigger donor scope

Far not all PST are equally good for modification. This is a lottery. Very seldom PST etalons have such a narrow bandpass as the etalon in JP Brahic telescope.
I saw only 3-4 PST mods which really worth it. All other show mixtured results.
The positive side is that PST is VERY easy to mod, very cheap to mod.

The front etalon from a Lunt 50 would require more work to modify.....The Marcon design comes to mind...
The internal etalon assembly from the Lunt 60 has been successfully used for a "straight forward" mod, but the PST version is well established and can perform very well.

I agree with Valery, not all PST's are equally capable - 10% are very good and give close to 0.7A, 80% are "OK" around >0.7 to 1.0A, and 10% should have been dumped rather than sold!.
I've used MANY over the years, and find maybe 1 in 4 give fantastic mod results......

And with our Aries solar kit the LS50F mod work extremely well. All are <0.7A and double stack is fantastic. You all already saw the pictures by me which were taken with SS and DS LS50F mod in a 150mm telescope. Also, single stack shows full sun disk with wealth of surface details and prominences around the limb. And the view through 150mm scope and binoviewer is nothing than jaw dropping or massive drooling.
